Jazz bass at the end of M.Bs...amazing! I play it myself on bass and its tough tough tough!!!! Gotta agree as well with Last train...every E.L.O. song he plays and sings....that is a major feat in itself!

I realise it's hardly a major contribution, but I'm quite the fan of Kelly's double bass work on No Way Out... although I don't know the exact musical term, that "slap and slide" bit played during the chorus really adds to the overall feel Jeff was aiming for, not to mention his backing vocals make me wish he'd been present on all of the Secret Messages album sessions.

Kelly doesn't need a finest hour he was great at everything he played on, if I did have to pick one track it would be Poker.

I'd say Kelly's finest hour is his work as a frontman/vocalist for OrKestra. If they'd had more of his songs on the "Part 2" albums, that band could have been much bigger. They clearly missed an opportunity there.

This is the correct answer. Probably the best thing ELOP2 ever did, honestly.

The bass line on 'Last Train To London' is superb in my humble opinion. Kelly had so much trouble with this part (despite apparently not having any problems during initial rehearsals) that Jeff took the bass guitar from him and recorded the final line in a single take, although large portions were supposedly looped. From what I've been told, Jeff could get very impatient whenever the preliminary core group tracking dates went on too long, and not even Richard suggesting a Clavinet to augment Kelly's work could appease their annoyed leader. However, if you look at Richard in the corresponding music video, he at least got to mime this idea, while Kelly went on to nail the part night after night for crowds. I'm certainly not suggesting that Kelly wasn't a good enough musician - the problem was more that Jeff was infuriated by the Discovery sessions lasting nearly a month, presumably because he wanted to concentrate on the overdubbing and mixing stages, not to mention adding vocals. By contrast, the band got their way through all of Time in just a fortnight, and despite being delayed by several months, Balance Of Power only took six weeks! This incident was the first of many that saw Kelly becoming increasingly sidelined in the studio, and I've been reliably informed that while he is still credited on Time, by this point Jeff was already handling more of his colleague's duties...
