I really enjoy Zoom, rate it very highly but I never felt it was ELO. Also thought there was no song that was a stand out commercial single, possibly State of mind, but as albums go I prefer it to AITU & FOON. Just my opinion though....

My feelings exactly, wrong choice of 1st single too... I have the opposite view. I see it as more ELO than AITU and FOON. I've always put this down to Jeff having other people on the Zoom tracks (however minor part they've played) and this brings something to the album. I also see AITU as more ELO than FOON. Like you I prefer it to AITU and FOON. The songs of these two albums to me feel 'samey' ie like opening his box of musical snippets and going right I need a short intro, then verse, chorus, bridge, verse, chorus, end and all under 3mins. There is nothing 'testing' or experimental. There are of course exceptions on the albums to this but they are in the minority!. Zoom still had that excitement in the songs. Infact FOON I've only played a handful of times, whereas AITU gets an occasional play, and Zoom is regularly played. Yes, it's great Jeff is releasing new music but FOON didn't float my boat.

Yes I will play Zoom quite regularly myself, I also play BOP a lot but most people seem to disagree with me on that one...

That's exactly what I've said, when Jeff Lynne has more musicians who collaborate to contribute something it's better, same goes for Armchair Theatre, then about the only song I like off From Out of Nowhere was its title track while Alone in the Universe has "When I Was a Boy" along with its title track, so this evidence becomes clear as more former members, guests, producers or engineers were let go his musical output progressively took nosedives no matter how good a songwriter he is! 1-ZOOM 2-Armchair Theatre 3-Alone in the Universe 4-From Out of Nowhere

It’s ironic that AITU and FOON completely out sold ZOOM and Armchair Theatre, It shows that music can be about timing and being flavour of the month not always just about the music. Zoom and AT were two excellent albums sadly ELO were just no longer current at the time. If Jeff does have a few hidden gems, what better time to release it now on the back of a couple of sellout tours, Two number one albums and the 50th anniversary, timing.....

But when compared to Alone in the Universe that stayed 3 weeks on Billboard's 200 Albums peaking at #23 in 2015, From Out of Nowhere was a bust here stateside only peaking at #47 for a total of 1 week on that chart in 2019 and what little success it did have was due to die hard fan's collecting 4 different vinyl and CD versions combined, ZOOM stayed on that chart for a total of 2 weeks peaking at #94 in 2001, then Armchair Theatre stayed on that chart for a total of 9 weeks peaking at #83 in 1990!

I was surprised at the chart performance of AITU and FOON in the states. I thought that the US tour was a big success, imagined that on the back of this they would have fared a lot better. Any thoughts on why? I follow a guy on you tube from Canada he said he struggled to find FOON locally.

Well, if you think about the setlist for the recent tours, it really was all about the greatest hits, and little or nothing to do with the new material...People who went to the shows knew and loved the older material, and were willing to shell out good money for tickets, but that really didn't really translate into interest in new or recent material. That's my best guess...

I purchased AITU, but never purchased FOON as it sounds "samey" to AITU. Enough of FOON was released on the internet that I knew I didn't need to purchase the last album. FOON was the first album I didn't purchase since 1975.
I am all for Jeff releasing new music, but I want something different and exciting. And now that all of his heroes have passed away, who is there to work with? He can't or won't work with former members of ELO, so that is out too. Maybe Don Arden needs to be around to motivate Jeff?

Too bad Don is also dead. Maybe his ghost along with Kelly's and Hugh's?

I purchased AITU, but never purchased FOON as it sounds "samey" to AITU. Really? I think FOON sounds quite different, more upbeat, more rock guitar, more down to earth; whereas AITU has a subtle underlying spacey dreamy feel to it.

I am so glad that FOON and AITU exist.
Do I play them like I play SM? Well, no.
