We will never know why Jeff left this out of the double album, it’s a song when I first heard it I didn’t like at all, but after a few listens it has grown on me a bit and I now wish it had been put on. It’s by no means ELOs best but deserves to be remembered. Maybe the 40th..... I enjoyed that - a lot! Thank you lasttrain929 It would fit right in with the rest of SM. Even to compliment HMOF. Big question is - is this a genuine JL production, or has it been cleaned up and 'enhanced' by a fan?

Don’t think so Tremblinwilbury but I’m positive if Jeff had decided to add his version to the double album it would have sounded a lot different. Jeff is the only person who can say how close it was to being included. Like you I think it should have been in it, even if it’s not the greatest song. I do get the SM vibe of this copy. At least we have the full Time album to look forward to now.

Something not too unrelated, and pretty interesting.

That would be Bill Bottrell's remix of the Secret Messages title track, done at Soundcastle Studios somewhere between the 3-4 and 3-11-83 acetates, sourced from a reference tape of the full double album with a very different running order not found on either of those test pressings. Many surprises await... including a swift takedown for whoever leaked these, I fear.
(Was anticipation of such an unofficial release partly why the planned 50th anniversary celebration announcement was pulled at the last possible minute? I apparently know nothing!)

What does delaying the special 50th anniversary announcement do in light of the recent couple of leaks? I'm not sure how that helps?
The only options they have as far I can see is to carry on regardless which means interest in unofficial leaks would diminish, or try to buy / secure alternate acetates / mixes known to be in existence. There can't be that many.
I suppose one thing I've thought is that if the double album release of Secret Messages had been done properly, these leaks wouldn't have been necessary.

Officially releasing rare tracks frequently renders bootlegs unnecessary.

A silly idea popped into my head: The Beatleisms in this song - doesn't Jeff need Lennon/McCartney permission to send it out as originally recorded?

All those references were only intended to instrumentally evoke the songs being mentioned - they're not actual samples or even note-perfect covers.

This damn song has been in my brain all day today. WTF? Nobody will ever say that it is ELO's finest moment, but it does have a way of lingering.
