Slightly different than the other threads attempting to reduce a double to a single, you must keep this single-album release at 10 songs. From the list below, create the final tracklist for Balance of Power. Would you change the original order, or possibly replace a familiar track with its alternate version?
Calling America Caught in a Trap Destination Unknown
Endless Lies Getting to the Point Heaven Only Knows Opening/Heaven Only Knows (alt version)
In for the Kill Is it Alright Matter of Fact (Afterglow version) Matter of Fact (alt lyrics version)
Secret Lives Secret Lives (alt version) Send It So Serious
Sorrow About to Fall Sorrow About to Fall (alt version)
Without Someone
My Choices:
Side One Opening/Heaven Only Knows (alt) So Serious
Without Someone Calling America
Destination Unknown
Side Two Sorrow About to Fall
Is it Alright Secret Lives Matter of Fact (alt lyrics version)
Getting to the Point

Interesting exercise, jimm64 On the subject of BOP, I mentioned before (some of you might remember) that I considered this to be a concept album - telling the story of a break-up. Some of you didn't agree. That's how I see it I haven't changed my mind - I'm keeping the original selection. I love listening to the extras though...

I came up with this one a bit ago. If I remember correctly, Jet Records forbade Caught In A Trap and Destination Unknown from being on the album for appearing too critical to the company, but that won't be an issue here. As much as I like Send It, I think Destination Unknown is much more meaningful as a closer. I also beefed it up to 12 tracks, but it's still around 43 min. long.
Side 1 Opening / Heaven Only Knows [Alt.] So Serious Getting To The Point Secret Lives Matter Of Fact Is It Alright
Side 2 Heaven Only Knows Sorrow About To Fall Without Someone Calling America Caught In A Trap Destination Unknown

I had also already made up a BOP album running / track order that I liked and agree Destination Unknown is a good closer as Jeff is off and isn't letting on where he is going ! (OK its the USA) :
Side 1 Opening / Heaven Only Knows - Alt Version So Serious Getting To The Point Secret Lives Is It Alright Matter Of Fact
Side 2 Sorrow About To Fall Without Someone Calling America In For The Kill Endless Lies Destination Unknown

I thought the original running order was pretty good but i have made a couple of changes to side 2.
Side 1,
1, Heaven Only Knows 2, So Serious 3, Getting To The Point 4, Secret Lives 5, Is It Alright
Side 2,
6, Sorrow About To Fall 7, Caught In A Trap 8, Calling America 9, Endless Lies 10, Destination Unknown
I always felt that 'Sorrow About To Fall' and 'Without Someone' were a little bit 'samey'. I can remember taping the album at the time and swapping the running order around these two songs. 'Send It' was a bit weak for me and i've swapped it for the traditional last track rocker.

Wait.....a couple of people left off Endless Lies? As long as Send It get's binned, I don't mind what appears on the album...

Yeah, I'm with Timeblue here. To me "Endless lies" is not the terrible song on the album, that would be "Send it".

I agree as well, leave out “send it” and put in “ Destination Unknown”. The original album was fine with me until I heard DU, couldn’t understand why they left it out.

I think we all have a song on most albums that we think are okay but would quite happily do a swap with one we prefer. One song of ELOs there is a lot of love for is “All my love” on FOON. I really don’t get this song and always skip the track when playing the album. But it seems to be popular with many ELO fans. So who am I to argue. It’s great we have a choice now with all the remastered CDs and double album release of SM.

Wait.....a couple of people left off Endless Lies? I omitted the song simply because I now consider it part of the definitive Secret Messages track listing.

Perhaps BoP's Endless Lies should be retitled "Endless Lies 2". It is a different version.
Or, how about retitling it "Balance Of Lies"?

Anyway, I think Endless Lies is the best track on BOP, and one of ELO's great moments.
I always loved the line "It's alright, count to ten, it will all be better then." Simple but brilliant.
And the pace change in the song is wonderful. And the merry-go-round music.
God I love this song.
