Who did the spoken intro on the recent tours? It doesn't sound the same as the original (whom I'm guessing is Jeff) and tbh sounds a bit lame....

It sounded straight from the record.

According to this its Jeff. www.jefflynnesongs.com/popup.php?data=Prologue19811_popupplus It sounds very different to the Wembley live version to my ears, maybe the speaking is the same and just the vocoder processing is different, would need to analyze. It's possible the Wembley version is slowed down because the original and Twilight were clearly speeded up on the studio record to a pitch maybe it wouldn't be possible to recreate live.

The original song in the album is on the key of C. Listening to all the available sources from the recent Twilight live performances, it's clear the whole song has been decreased to A, most likely because Jeff wouldn't be comfortable today with the very high pitch at some sections of the main vocals. Then, as it seemed from the clips that few (or none) of the band members is doing anything during Prologue in the gigs, I assumed that except some synths, most of Prologue, and the spoken section of sure, was actually sampled from the original recording just switching the key. But I made my own key reduction to the original song, and compared the recited words to those on Wembley or Bust....and couldn't conclude they were the same, finding some small differences. I can't tell whether they are due to the key transfer proccess or because it's a different vocal. So, forgive me...after the speech I came back to square one!

When I heard the intro at Wembley I honestly didn’t notice a lot of difference, I just assumed it would sound slightly different as it was live. It didn’t detract from my enjoyment of either the intro or Twilight. I was never lucky enough to see “Fred” or the original 81 tour performance. But since reading your comments I have listened to both again and you are quite right it is slowed down. Like others I had just taken for granted it was sampled from the original. Guess I just don’t have a great musical ear for sound. But it is a very good intro to a concept album.

Well, it is slowed down in key, though not in tempo, they are playing the song virtually at the same speed than on the original record. Within the enormous and unthinkable luck of 21st century ELO's resurrection, I was pretty unlucky; Time is my preferred album and they didn't play any song out of it on the shows I attended in 2016 and 2018.....and the worst of the lucks came with the 2020 one......

The Wembley or Bust video very clearly shows Bernie Smith playing the opening keyboards in Prologue, with one of the cellists watching him doing so.

It may be just the original voiced "stem" reprocessed with a more modern vocal effect. Although i do wonder if the way 'another time' is spoken also sounds different.
It's also possible it might have been sourced from a rumoured intended followup to Mr Blue Sky album which was mentioned on this site and elsewhere.
I'm not a musician and my points are speculative but I do prefer the TIME album version - it sounds more epic and the vocoder effect less derivative compared to the Wembley live album.

I can't really say any more than that - the last time I tried providing deeper analysis on what's happening in Jeff's recent live shows, I was hit with a (not so) polite C&D request from someone representing a member of the current touring band.

Could the reverb and echo from the stadium affect the way it sounds.

Could the reverb and echo from the stadium affect the way it sounds. I heard it in the much smaller Sheffield Arena as well as the Hull stadium. It sounded pretty much the same in all places. But I don't have a musician's ear.

What does that mean? I am really shocked to see that. Aren`t we allowed to analyse the live sound of Jeff Lynne`s E.L.O.? Why should someone be silenced who tries that? Is it a crime to talk about the elements of a live band? What are those guys thinking? We are fans! And fans often like to analyse and dissect the music of their heroes. And without us fans Jeff Lynne would still be sitting in a small flat somewhere in Middle England and not in the hills of sunny L.A. as a millionaire.
