Not "too damned cheerful" for me, but just "meh". Doesn't do much to me. The verse is nice and bumpy, the chorus is a step downwards, and the part of "hey, there, Mr Blue" is just boring. Far from ELO's worst song in my book, but nothing brilliant, and definitely not deserving the ELO flagship song title. You could say I passively dislike it, or never interested me. Now, "Turn to Stone", that's one song I actively dislike. MBS suffers from being massively over played and while its not a bad track it's just too familiar.

That must be the case in England, for all I know. Before I discovered ELO in 2012 I had never heard Mr Blue Sky, and since then I can't remember having caught it even one single time on the radio, TV, or other place not directly related to ELO. People in Argentina don't know it. So no, my judgement of it is not affected by the "overplayed" element. I can totally relate to what you say, though, by thinking about other overplayed songs I used to like (maybe the epitome is Spin Doctors' "Two Princes"). They end up tiring you and you are often unable to appreciate their beauty anymore.

Hi all
Mine is:
Side 1 Turn to Stone Sweet Is The Night Believe Me Now Steppin’ Out Across the Border
Side 2 Standin' In The Rain Big Wheels Summer And Lightning Mr Blue Sky
I also wanted to keep Concerto complete even though MBS gets a bit boring these days. I’ve got five on side 1 but Believe Me Now is modest enough.
I really don’t get the inclusion by many of Sweet Talkin Woman...

jimm64 , thanks for posting that interesting that the reviewer doesn't mention MBS when listing the "best cuts" It's not like he could fall back on the "over played" excuse way back in 1977. Mr Blue Sky seems to be "too damned cheerful" for some ears. Considering how popular MBS is today, its somewhat surprising that it barely made the US Top 40 when originally released as a single in the summer of 1978, peaking at #35.

A real shame that MBS is getting such bad press, it’s a great song that completes the clever Concerto for a rainy day. No record can be left out of this side, it all fits so well together. MBS is only guilty of being overplayed and the go to song for radio and music stations. STW has kinda moved that way too, it’s probably the next song I hear most often. But you know the great thing about Out of The Blue, there ALL great songs and not many albums have that claim. So we are all winners here picking our single album.

Whereas I'd kill to hear either of those on the radio... I have to partially agree with Helmut83, people here certainly do know MBS but the only time I've heard it was in a department store, and it wasn't even the original, it was some cover version that I could really do without hearing for the rest of my life... Don't Bring Me Down is the go-to ELO song for radio in my area, or Evil Woman if I'm lucky... maybe Strange Magic or Hold On Tight once in a blue moon... Rock 'n Roll Is King, Fire On High, or Do Ya if I believe the hearsay from my family members...

I can't say that I've ever heard Strange Magic or Fire On High on the radio, lucky you!

I have caught "Strange Magic" once on the radio! But it was "thaaat time when I caught Strange Magic on the radio". I even remember the circumstances, go figure (I was travelling by train back from downtown where I had gone in search for tennis shoes my size ). "Fire on high", never. "Hold on tight", there's a pop-oldies radio station here which plays it regularly. It also plays "Calling America", "Can't get it out of my head" and several songs from "Discovery".

A real shame that MBS is getting such bad press Nah, why? We are all entitled to our opinions, aren't we? Think about this: I'm a big fan of "Jungle" and it appeared in just one list... mine! And no one is lamenting that "Jungle" is getting no love.

Would love to hear it played more. I was at a wedding reception a couple of years ago and the DJ played it loud it sounded really great.

"Jungle" is a great song... for me and you. Seems like not for everyone, and that's alright. Wow, a "Jungle" hearing at a random place, that is something remarkable! I bet not many can say they lived that experience. If I did I'd get so excited I might start mimicking the animal sounds at the beginning even if I were at a solemn event like a wedding reception.

I just think that it's a song Jeff couldn't be bothered with, and to me doesn't fit the album's feel.More a Discovery track in my opinion...
