ok ok,so I'm a little late...hey chill..... this is my selection-a band that should have been huge IMHO but the fickle public thought otherwise.I have chosen a greatest hits compilation of this band just to showcase the talents of this band that I have seen many times. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the one and only ICICLE WORKS.

OK Timeblues,
Here is the track listing of "The Best of Icicle Works", that you meant to post, it's not called "Greatest Hits".
Also, this link should be the full album, apparently with four bonus tracks.
1. Hollow Horse (Long Version) 2. Love Is A Wonderful Colour 3. Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream) 4. Understanding Jane (92 Version) 5. Shit Creek 6. High Time (Acoustic) 7. Who Do You Want For Your Love? 8. Evangeline 9. Little Girl Lost 10. When It All Comes Down (92 Version) 11. Starry Blue Eyed Wonder 12. Out Of Season 13. Kiss Off 14. Up Here In The North Of England 15. Firepower 16. Blind
Looking forward to checking out the tracks this week, look for my feedback later in the week!

As it is a youtube playlist there seems to be a problem playing all the songs through a link on the forum. If you go direct to this Youtube link you should be presented with the playlist Youtube

I'm looking forward to hearing more Icicle Works. I know some of Ian's solo stuff and I like 'Love Is A Wonderful Colour' a lot. For some reason I've been expecting this band to turn up eventually

This Liverpool band burst onto the scene in 1983 with love is a wonderful colour to great critical acclaim but never really hit the big time.I saw them throughout the 80's and they were a great live band too.Chris Sharrock the drummer, went on to play with World Party,The LA's,Robbie Williams and Oasis.I chose a greatest hits rather than any of their albums just to showcase their talents as a band as a whole.

I've heard of them, but have never heard their songs. I'll check 'em out, and leave my feedback.

Yes, I've heard of them too, did they have one big hit? Anyway, I LOVE the La's and Cast so if this is anything like those bands I'm almost bound to like it - looking forward to hearing it.

Hollow Horse – Nice opening with the 12-string guitars. The guy has an interesting voice, on this song. Kinda like Bowie meets Ian Astbury from The Cult. The song itself sounds like a late 80’s alt-rock anthem.
Love Is A Wonderful Colour – If Geoff Tate from Queensryche fronted a U2-like band, this is what it’d sound like.
Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream) – Great drums! Again, very, very 80’s sounding “new wave” song.
Understanding Jane - I like this one. The production is a bit dated, but the song itself is catchy. It reminds me of another song, but I can’t quite put my finger on which one.
Shit Creek – I could see where Trent Reznor may have been influenced by this song in some of his Nine Inch Nails work. Not bad.
High Time – I think I’ve heard this one before. Honestly, the first thing that struck me was how much it sounds like Green Day. Maybe Billie Joe “borrowed” from it.
Who Do You Want For Your Love? – The Kinks meets ELO! Great melody. My favorite, so far.
Evangeline – Not a fan of this one. It’s pretty generic.
Little Girl Lost – A good, soaring chorus makes up for the lacking of a good melody.
When It All Comes Down – The guitars sound like the “Jeff Lynne style”, we hear so often in his productions. OK song. Almost Springsteen-esque.
Starry Blue Eyed Wonder – I like the cool organ sound. I’m glad the song rocked up a bit, because it was starting to get repetitive.
Out Of Season – The beginning sounds like one of my old cell phone ringtones. Didn’t really care for this one.
Kiss Off – Wow, I could see where INXS may have been influenced by this. Very funky.
Up Here In The North Of England – Lyrically, I like this one. Not much of a melody, though.
Firepower – Atmospheric and interesting sounds. Again, some good lyrical content.
Blind – Nice, soulful ballad. Pretty different from everything else I’ve heard from them.
Overall, I liked most of this album. A few rough spots, but the good outweighs the bad.

FYI, most of these songs are on the Grooveshark link above, but a few aren't, so I had to search YouTube.

I got through half of it today, sounds good, will play the other half tomorrow, and finish writing my thoughts, so look for my feedback tomorrow or Friday. Overall so far, it sounds pretty good. I tend to want to write them off as another pretty boy 80s band, but then the songs get a lot stronger, so have a good impression of it so far.

This is a difficult album to review. I think I need a few weeks to get used to all the tunes before coming to a proper conclusion about the songs.
Hollow Horse – Reminds me a little of New Order musically. Some great drums. Love Is A Wonderful Colour – I’ve always seemed to like this track. Every time I hear it I forget it’s an Icicle Works song and wonder who it’s by! Birds Fly (Whisper To A Scream) – A very 80s track which I love very much. More great drums. Understanding Jane - I really like this one. Very good drums and even better guitar. Shit Creek – Another great guitar track. I never knew the band was such a loud band! High Time – I like this track too. I reminds me of a Britpop track. Who Do You Want For Your Love? – Again a good track. Nice guitar. Evangeline – A decent track, not as much of a favourite as some of the others. Little Girl Lost – This track doesn’t seem to be as good as the others yet I still like it. When It All Comes Down – like the last track, even the weaker songs by the band are still excellent. Starry Blue Eyed Wonder – A good track. I do like the drums and guitar. Out Of Season – I’m not too keen on this one. But it’s still alright. Kiss Off – Same as the last track. Good but not special enough. Up Here In The North Of England – This is better. The music is more interesting here Firepower and Blind – I do like these songs but not as much as the earlier tracks. I will be listening to all the songs again. I can't believe the Icicle Works are better than I thought. I never knew their songs were filled with such great drums and guitar.
