Can't believe Neil's gone. Met him once after a show. So nice and friendly, took time to chat to his many fans.

Does anyone remember his series, The Innes Book Of Records, on BBC2? He could pastiche any style of song.
I always liked this all-purpose late night cabaret number.

I was very shocked and saddened to hear about Neil's death but there's something very special about a person if the thought of them can make you smile and Neil is one of those special people.

If Neil had been known only for The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band he'd be a legend. 'I'm the Urban Spaceman' is always better than you imagined. It's the song you think is a bit of a throwaway until you hear it again and realise it's a masterpiece. Actually, perhaps most of what Neil created might have been on the surface just a throwaway song to be heard once or twice as part of a joke or a funny TV show but in reality they are very clever and well-thought out pieces with depth.

The Rutles songs are astonishingly good. They weren't just funny imitations as most comedy Beatles impersonators might attempt or blatant copies in the Oasis style. They were clever and sincere and gave more than they took from the Beatles legend. 'Cheese and Onions' is my favourite and I think of it more as a companion to the Beatles, a song in itself rather than a pastiche. It makes me think of Jeff and ELO and how he used what the Beatles started to create his own take on their style.

The 'Pirate Song' is of course a classic and it definitely makes your day better to hear it. But the main thing about Neil I want to pay tribute to is his influence on my childhood. I didn't know until a couple of years ago that he'd been behind some of my favourite kids tv shows.

Neil did the music for The Riddlers. I didn't watch this too often as the puppets slightly frightened me but the theme music was memorable. -

He also created the music for Puddle Lane as well as playing the part of the Magician (I can't believe I never noticed this was him!) -

But most of all, most importantly to me, Neil provided the music, narration and often the stories for one of my favourite ever cartoons: Raggy Dolls! -

I only have to hear that music to go back 30 years. If I had to choose Neil's masterpiece I might have to pick Raggy Dolls not only because the theme tune is so memorable but because he had such a large part in creating the show. Sure, it's no Rutles but it's just as much a showcase for his talents. It's always more difficult to entertain children than it is adults and since I adored his work as a child it must mean that he's a genius because I was a very hard to please kid! It's easy to respect an artist when you are an adult but kids care nothing for a person's oeuvre. As long as the they are entertained the child will be happy and I was very happy and very lucky to be entertained by the great Neil Innes!
