Jeff has a fantastic voice. Would anyone care to argue about that? He admits that his dad wasn't keen on his falsetto. It's ok What is amazing is how well his voice has lasted. I think it's as good on FOON as it ever has been. He obviously takes great care of it. As does another great singer... Colm Wilkinson. Very quietly-spoken, but WHAT a pair of lungs that man has got! I'm nominating him as my next Great Voice. Not because he's Irish... Not because he was the first English-speaking Jean Valjean... He's nominated because of this performance of Music Of The Night... (That note at 2:30!) He took on the role in Toronto. Interestingly, he was the very first Phantom - even before Michael Crawford. He sang the part in ALWs Sydmonton Festival in 85 (I think). So, who's next? Who do YOU think has a Great Voice?

In the replies I read KD didn't warm up her voice and there was no rehearsal with the band, they ad-libbed. You can start at 4:00, or 5:00 to the end.

So, who's next? Who do YOU think has a Great Voice? It's likely that Jeff Lynne's voice has lasted well compared to his contempories due to his relative lack of hard touring. Night in night out singing will take a toll in the end, as it has with performers whose live performances far eclipse him. Having said that, I'd personally go for David Gilmour, late Of Pink Floyd, as one of the greatest living vocal performers, despite his age and almost continual touring since the early 70s.

Some excellent choices so far... KD - Wow BSJ - straight in with a cracking voice! I sat up and took notice when I first heard 'Crying'. That was sung by Don McLean (this rates quite high on my 'Brilliant' list). Imagine my surprise on hearing the original. Roy's duet with KD was something else indeed. But this solo... What can I say? She's a bit good! Lost On You - I've honestly not heard anything like this before - thank you dillwynEva - you chose the only way to describe this unomusette - perfection... Dear Eva (bless her) Dave Gilmour - Good choice coathanger... Pink Floyd are one of my secret passions. He's done a fine job since Roger packed his bags and left.

Up until Animals, The Wall and The Final Cut, Gilmour was regarded by the rest of the band as the main lead singer in Floyd. What he wasn’t very good at was the more theatrical vocal delivery perfected by Roger Waters on those three titles (and his later solo output). One of the reasons I rate Floyd so highly is their diversity of vocal sound, intelligence of lyrics and general attention to concept and detail. Nobody else comes close IMHO although the post-Waters albums didn’t hold a candle to the earlier stuff (particularly lyrically) as far as I was concerned despite Gilmour’s best efforts.

I thought I'd chuck in another chap with a decent pair of lungs - Steve Balsamo. He's a Swansea lad who found fame as the Messiah and went on to write his own Story.
Here he covers Eye In The Sky, accompanied by the late great Eric Woolfson
In 1996, however wearing his jelaba and sandals, he brought tears to many people's eyes with an incredible performance of Gethsemane every night on the stage of the Lyceum...

I can remember Steve Balsamo being on the radio a fair bit a few years ago but he must have been concentrating on his theatre work since. Good to hear him again.

Getting back to my first choice, how about this for a performance from a 75 year old...
