The explanations they give as to the criteria of what a happy song is are, of course, subjective, but nevertheless interesting because they involve some "science". But some of those explanations are very confusing, like this one: " we generally like songs with a tempo that deviates from the average pop song tempo, that are in a major key, and are a bit more complex than three-chord songs, unless the song is a major key". WTF??? I disagree with the song needing to have more than three chords to be happier. On the contrary, to me the happiest songs are 3 major chord songs. When you get a good, fresh, fluent melody over the 3 basic major chords, nothing can beat that in terms of feeling of happiness. If I had to recall a happy song I think it would be this South African 3-chords classic that never gets old: As for ELO, in my opinion it's happiest song (also it's best) is not "Mr. Blue Sky" but the song that precedes it in the album: "Summer and Lightning", which except for the bridge is all 3 major chords.

ok Helmut83 - how many chords in this one? wouldn't say it's happier than MBS, but it always bring a smile to my face and I swear it has nothing to do with the girl dancing

Helmut83I am not a musician, so I have no idea about the number of chord changes, but "Summer and Lightning" always lifts my spirits, too. I think "Jungle" is another great mood booster, and it also contains some nonsense lyrics, which the article states can be a component of some of the happiest tunes.

Mr Blue Sky is undeniably one of the happiest songs ever written, I don't care how many times I've heard it on the radio (though maybe I'm biased cos I've never heard it on the radio... only ever DBMD, the rare occurrence of Evil Woman or Strange Magic...). Totally agree with So Fine and Summer and Lightning too.
I'd like to nominate Sweet Is the Night.

Outside of ELO... not sure if it counts since it's not the original song, but this one always makes me happy.
