I only saw it several years later on TV one afternoon and it was pretty dreadful. It can't have been in cinemas very long as the reviews were so bad and it must have got only a limited release outside the USA. I can only assume the publicity must have played up the ELO factor and of course ONJ.
It's a shame really, because the fact that it was such a notorious bomb obscures the truth that the soundtrack was actually excellent. Leaving aside our boys contribution, the rest of the OST was very good especially The Tubes/ONJ's Rock/40's big band mash-up and the lovely duet between ONJ and Gene Kelly.
Just needed a better film.

Yes! I saw it at the movie theater! I was a 15 year old rabid ELO fan at the time, so of course I went to see it! I dragged along my 10 year old brother, too! I enjoyed it, even though I could tell that it was not a "good" movie. The music was fun, and that was good enough for me. My brother swears that he remembers it as a very bad experience and only reluctantly decided to forgive me after many years !

I did not (I wasn't born yet, after all ). I still haven't, actually, I suppose I should remedy that at some point? However, my mom floored me by telling me that she did see it in theaters when it came out! We were watching an interview with Jeff, and the subject came up. She doesn't remember much about it, and had forgotten about the soundtrack. I told her the soundtrack was great, and she made a note to look it up.

I can honestly say that I only bought the album for ELO only, the other side is in mint condition as I never played it! But in answer to your question,no I didn't see it at the cinema.

I saw it in the theatre but how could any ELO fan not go see it if given the chance.

I passed on Xanadu - too frilly. I was moving on to Dire Straits.
still haven't watched the movie after all these years and the YouTube clips don't make me regret it much easier to just listen to the good parts (Jeff's songs) and not have to sit through the roller skating
I did go see ONJ in Grease though.

I saw it in a cinema in London as part of winning a fan club competition, it's not the world's greatest film but it's still a nice bit of colourful escapism which we could do with these days. Without the soundtrack it would have been rubbish though

Strangely enough, my sister dragged me along to see Can't Stop The Music (The Village People musical!) which was out at around the same time, and I've never forgiven her for that either!

I still haven't seen it. Which is kind of strange, since I saw Grease three times, mainly because I thought Olivia Newton-John was amazing.
But you know, the end of the 70's and beginning of the 80's - punk and new wave came around, suddenly it was more important to listen to The Slits or Siouxsie & The Banshees.

Did not see the film on original release, saw it in the 2000s on some cable TV channel - wasn't good but certainly not as bad as I was led to believe. Bought the soundtrack album right away. To me it kept the ELO hit single train rolling. Little did I know that while ELO still was prevalent on AM radio, the band was starting to lose their presence/importance on FM rock radio in North America (started with Discovery...) that would result in the relative under performance of the Time album and the slide for rest of the 80s. To this day I still think Time should have been as big as albums like Foreigner 4, REO Speedwagon Hi Infidelity, Styx Paradise Theater, Journey Escape et al.... I clearly recall taking the Xanadu album to school (grade 6) to be played on a little record player at a classroom Valentine's party and after we got to 'The Fall' somebody said put on Glass Houses (Billy Joel) instead!

How rude! If you can remember their name and address justice shall be done

Oh I remember the name alright! Actually a great guy, excellent sportsman (my rival in track and field!). We lived in the same neighbourhood growing up and we were mates. He was well known in our small community as an excellent hockey player, very popular with the ladies. He was a big fan of AC/DC and the Canadian band Prism.... In my elementary school several people felt that ELO (Discovery era) sounded too much like the Bee Gees...

I saw it and loved it. But then again, hanging at the roller rink and listening to ELO was my life at that time. Those were the days🙂
