As a longish time fan it was a case of ELO up until '83 then a bit of Bev in Sabbath, then seeing Violinski around 85 ish, then back to ELO for BOP,then Orkestra and part2 towards the end of the 80s. The 90s were admittedly quiet then the false dawn of Zoom happened. The internet came along and things just took off from there so although there were quiet parts, there has generally always been something to keep me interested...

I used to tell my wife, I sure hope before that man dies he gets the respect he deserves. I wondered if he felt forgotten at times. All of the great artist he worked with knew how important to music he was, as did we here.

It didn't help that whenever he worked with other artists the press very often neglected to mention him (and still do for that matter). After a while he probably did believe he wasn't as good as any of them. Imagine how he must have felt when he first ventured back out on stage as himself (was it Children in Need? Or Hyde Park?) and experienced the full force of audience appreciation.

So back on topic, who cares if you are young enough to be Jeff's grand daughters, if you like the music then who gives a f**k what other people think?

nobodyschild Oh, we shared the "other young people telling us we are uncool for liking older music" issue. I had one close friend in high school who liked the same kind of music as me, but the rest of them mainly thought I was weird for listening to older music. Total opposite for me growing up... maybe a generational thing? Maybe the crowd I hung around? Probably the latter because I've met a lot of people my age with a very poor knowledge of music in general and very little curiosity about it. My friends and I were all super curious about older music and very competitive about our knowledge of it!!!! I remember going to the used record store to buy my first Pink Floyd album (I chose Ummagumma). It was like a rite of passage! I was so nervous taking it to the counter... was I cool enough? Was it the right "Floyd" album for me?

So back on topic, who cares if you are young enough to be Jeff's grand daughters, if you like the music then who gives a f**k what other people think? I saw a meme (is that what the kids call them these days?) on the internet a few months ago. I forget the exact wording or the band mentioned but it basically said "Why are you a fan of this band? They are so old!" and the reply in the meme was "ok, I bet you are a fan of food and food's been around a lot longer than the band so shut up!"

I just saw them pop up on Facebook! I also just defended them because someone had the audacity to say that they couldn't be true fans because of their age. All the other comments seem to be positive and congratulatory, though!

I just saw them pop up on Facebook! I also just defended them because someone had the audacity to say that they couldn't be true fans because of their age. There will always be sad, resentful people who can't stand other being happy, and the place where you are more likely to find them is on the internet, venting their resentment from behind a screen. You longtime ELO fans definitely deserve respect for your dedication through all those years when the biggest ELO related news you could hope for was Jeff going out to eat with Joe Walsh... elophile, I caught the tail of those years, the last 2 or 3, with the complete emptiness of news, the forum having at times only 3 or 4 comments a day and just a handful of regularly active members, the polls and contests being the main attraction, and I even remember that news about Jeff going out to eat with Joe Walsh. And as I recall, you were there. You didn't participate as much as you do now but you popped in from time to time and participated, with the blue violin as your avatar image. Am I wrong? It didn't help that whenever he worked with other artists the press very often neglected to mention him (and still do for that matter). I'm not sure whether I prefer the "critics" and "experts" neglecting him -or not mentioning him for not having a clue of whom he was- or the classic introduction that the more aware critics used to make: "the guy who worked with the likes of George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, etc...". I don't think I can stand that introduction one more time without borrowing elophile's flamethrower. Until I found this site, I though maybe I was the only one who understood the genius of Jeff's music. I knew of ELO's music in the 70's but until I saw them on the "Out of the Blue" tour in '78 and was completely blown away, I had never thought of how many great songs Jeff had written. Most of my friends were into southern rock and country so ELO wasn't "cool" to them either. It was fine with me because I knew what I liked. ELO was not cool for your friends, which at least meant they knew what they were talking about. Imagine myself in a country where people don't have a clue about ELO's existence. I felt so alone in the appreciation of Jeff Lynne's genius that I had to search on the internet to see if there were other people who thought the same. And to be honest I felt kind of relieved to find the old forum, not because I needed any validation of my musical taste (I can be the only person in the world who thinks something and I'll be backing my own opinion all the same) but because I could finally get to talk with other people who understood what I was talking about. Going back to the girls' topic, when I was your age I had very little awareness of ELO, although I vaguely knew of it's existence and of Jeff Lynne. I only discovered ELO fully -and became a fan- when I was about 28 or so, and I don't feel anything less of a fan than any other, so don't let anyone make you feel that way for the simple and not really relevant fact that they are older.

Holy cow, this is crazy, I don’t know what to say! I was just coming here to (finally—really sorry about the wait) post the next bit of our story, and then I see that we made it onto the official social pages, what!! I hadn’t checked my Instagram yet today but naturally after seeing this I rushed over and it was the first post I saw, super wild, the whole experience was super surreal but here’s proof telling me I wasn’t dreaming it all up! Nice to see some fellow forumheads in the comments, too

Sorry I haven’t been around for a few days... my turn for band camp... Just saw the news that we made Jeff Lynne’s official social media! Emilie had asked us if we would be okay with having some photos posted, but I didn’t know whether they actually would! And BIuebird, I saw your comment before seeing that you’d mentioned it here, and I thought to myself, “I bet I know who wrote that”... thanks for that, you’re very sweet. As you said, the overwhelming majority of the comments have been positive though; it’s great to see how many people were excited that Jeff has some young fans to carry on his legacy. Really, from all of you, the outpouring of support concerning our fan status has been incredible, both here on the forum and on the social media pages (yep, I’m pretty sure I found some of you in the comments ) I’m so grateful to have such a wonderful ELO family! Now, I keep promising a few more additions to the recount of our spectacular experience... I really do think the next one is coming soon... come on, nobodyschild, we now have legions of followers impatiently waiting!
