A quick note: Kelly, Mik and Hugh were performing with ELO Part II from a very early point in that band's life, though they technically needed to still be promoted as guests from opening act OrKestra. By the time the headline group was recording its second album, Moment Of Truth, a deal had been negotiated with Jeff so that Mik and Kelly could finally join Part II as official members.

Are you saying that PT2 had to consult with Jeff if ex ELO members was to join? I never knew that.

I've read on several occasions that one of Jeff's initial conditions when he allowed Bev to continue as ELO Part II was that Kelly couldn't be a full member or be seen to profit from contributing to any studio material, but that an agreement was reached late into the sessions for Moment Of Truth. Also, it's been suggested that another reason it took Kelly so long to become permanent within the band is because of his objections to the Ardens still having considerable influence behind the scenes (long before the focus of his lawsuit switched to Jeff, his direct employer, Kelly's 1983 lawsuit had been aimed more at Jet Records and Don Arden in particular). My understanding is that Peter Kuys - Kelly's manager at the time - was the one who advised that OrKestra remain an active band long after they'd begun their integration into Part II as a way of keeping money coming in. I seem to recall several tracks from the Roll Over Beethoven compilation appearing in various films and television shows around this period, but all this seemed to do is get Jeff's attention even more. At one point, Kelly distanced himself from Part II altogether, though he was fully on board as of late 1993. Not long after this, Dino went from releasing OrKestra's music to that of the original ELO, with its 1994 "best of" going on to be a massive seller here in the UK, thanks in part to much greater promotion than Jet's own previous Greatest Hits Volume 2.

Was Hughie a member of Orkestra from their inception up until merging into part 2?

Hugh was indeed a member of OrKestra at the time they first started appearing as "special guests" with ELO Part II, but he wasn't around when these two groups officially joined forces... I'd rather not go into details right now, except to say there were disagreements that I'll be covering in greater detail soon enough.

It's just that I have a short video of Orkestra appearing at City Varieties, Leeds which was reported on 'Look North' back in 1990/91 and there is no sign of Hughie on the clip.

I'm not actually sure of the broadcast date for that Look North report, but Hugh was definitely a member of OrKestra when Kelly and Mik first started performing live as featured guests of ELO Part II on this group's earliest UK tour. Since he's credited on both OrKestra albums, my guess is that Hugh joined the band in early 1991, as the aforementioned Honest Men clip from Part II wasn't released too long after as its parent record - according to Wikipedia, the single charted in March that year, so it's likely the TV segment was from 1990. Do we have any further info of when OrKestra played that advertised date at the Leeds City Varieties? That would help determine a more accurate timeline...

The clip that I have (and it's on youtube too) didn't give a date as such. I remember hearing the presenters mention it and I luckily had a tape in the video recorder!

I contacted City Varieties Leeds and they got back to me with the info that Orkestra played there in March 1988,much earlier than the 1990 that I thought it was!
