Here I am!
For a start I love the album cover, it's a classic
Fabulous orchestral opening, no ELO fan can find fault with this.
"Show Me" - The chords remind me of Poison Arrow, the vocal sounds a bit drowned by all the layers of musical effects. Sterotypical ABC song (not at all a bad thing) but maybe not strong enough as an opener?
"Poison Arrow" - And here we are...maybe "Show Me" is a kind of overture to it? Anyway this is a total classic, love it to bits. It's the very sort of song I love to "sing" along to whilst inventing my own shapes to throw. Martin Fry sings like he's doing that too. Winner.
"Many Happy Returns" – Nice semi-spoken intro and I like the saxophone tooting far away in the early part, makes it very atmospheric. Usually a sax is right up front in your face. Nodding along happily to this.
"Tears Are Not Enough" – Lovely guitar work on this, very Nile Rogers. Makes me want to put on tons of make up and hit the dance floor. And I am a rubbish dancer. Head, feet and shoulders twitching away to this little beauty. It's the very kind of song that epitomises the 1980's, in a good way.
"Valentine's Day" – The first 30 seconds and I'm grinning like an idiot, fab opening lines! Lovely chunky bass sound too.
"The Look of Love" (Part One) - immediately I'm back in my teens as this begins. Of course at the time I would have been laughing at it but maturity has taught me about quality. There is nothing to criticise about this song, it has overblown vocals, a great beat and a twangy bass line. Not to mention the string-plucking middle bit and the "if you judge a book by its cover." into overacted spoken part . Yippie i yippie i ay! Perfection.
"Date Stamp" – How do you follow that? Although this has a nice funky bass line it's a bit of an anticlimax. Plus the up front female vocals remind me of the ever-irksome R. Vela muscling in on my hero.
"All of My Heart" – Dramatic opening, and who can fault the lyrics? Not me, they are espcially awesome. I could quote the whole song *swoons* The ending does take too long though.
"4 Ever 2 Gether"- Moody intro, interesting beat to this one and the bass line is mega-cool. Is their bassist a god in his field or something? Synths are a bit too loud in this one for me. And it goes on slightly too long.
"The Look of Love" (Part Four) – We had an overture, we must have a finale. It's short, it's sweet..hang on, there's more...n'aww, I rather like it. If you can't do an orchestral reprise of your own album where's the fun?
One of the very best things about this is Martin Fry's over-the-top vocals, he is the king of hamming it up and I love it because it makes me want to join in and outdo him. I can imagine doing some very energetic housework to this album. Plus it doesn't take itself too seriously which is always a positive point for me. The tunes are catchy, the sound is classic 1980's, eleven out of ten.
Thanks for sharing, Horace!
