Artwork is very important but I don't think you realise just how important until it goes wrong.
Even though a lot of today's music is downloaded, I don't think it spoils the idea of cover art as the artwork would probably be as inspired as the music it represents anyway and today that usually means very little. The Pink Floyd / Hypgnosis days seem to be gone.
ANWR might be my favourite ELO artwork. I haven't been keen on Time but it's BOP I'm not a fan of. It's just too 80s and I always wonder if I'd have listened to the LP differently if I'd never seen the artwork.

There is the ELO Zoom promo cover, of course, which can be found online. Otherwise than that there is the 'rejected' cover that, to the best of my knowledge, never was used except for maybe some kind of initial place holder. There is also this initial Time cover you may be interested in? Both pretty low res. As for a high res cover of the originally intended (?) "handshake" cover for SM, Gordon Lynne is probably your (our) best hope. He shared a stunning picture of a photoshopped version he had done in high res - with watermarks - on the Steve Hoffman forum. An absolute beauty! I don't seem to be able to attach files, please let me know if you want me to PM the pics to you Thanks! I've been meaning to upload the un-watermarked version for a while as I've gotten my hands on ever higher resolution images to create a second version of the artwork (both in poster and album form). Here's my first attempt from a while back: Let me know your thoughts--enjoy!

Thank you very much. As someone who likes to do a bit of video-, music- and photo-editing, I can only imagine it must have been almost excruciating work? Beautifully done! Both you and Shardender have provided enough information for me to now go ahead and do my own little "as originally intended" gatefold cover for my Japanese mini-lp cd project. The music has been edited and put in place... all I need now is to get back to Japan or Denmark where I have a printer that can actually do this kind of... well... printing.
Again, thanks for sharing. I, for one, really appreciate it
Also, thank you Horacewimp for your information about attachments and pictures.

Brilliant to see the artwork in such detail - is that braille along the bottom in the version with text? If so, what does it say? There are too many characters for it to be the album title, but there are three groups which might make up Electric Light Orchestra. Sorry if this has been discussed before.

I love it but the one thing that's always bothered me is that the watch face is upside down. I can see why it's shown like that .To us,the viewer of the poster its the right way up but to the watch wearer its upside down and back to front. And looking at the image again the person on the left is placing his envelope in the person on the right's left hand pocket meaning they would have to stretch across the body. And that cuff is all wrong.
OR I'm wrong!
I always thought that the braille said "waiting for a 40th Anniversary version of Time? Ah ha ha ha ha ha!"

Love the music on Time, but I always thought the album cover was cheap. But then again, the band was on a slide downwards in terms of album sales. OTTB was the peak, and while Disco - Very went platinum in the U.S., it sold less, same with Time, then SM, then BOP. ELO was in essence on a 8 year album slide.
And from what I read, it appears that the band didn't have that much influence on album design - it appears that the Ardens had more influence. Although Tandy had the credit for Disco - Very. If ELO had a resident graphic artist in the band, who knows how things might have turned out.
But then again, the credits would have said: "Words, Music, and Artwork by Jeff Lynne"

I've got one of the Secret Messages "handshake" promo posters. I keep thinking about putting it on ebay, but I've no idea if they are rare. Anyone know anything about them?

I've got one of the Secret Messages "handshake" promo posters. I keep thinking about putting it on ebay, but I've no idea if they are rare. Anyone know anything about them? I bought this many years ago, due to its size I never got it framed (4ft x 3 ft) Sorry I can’t remember how much I paid for it but Its supposed to be one of the rarer promotional posters and I don’t see it that often on eBay. It’s a shame your selling it, maybe someone on this forum would be interested In buying it, but as to it’s value now I can’t help you. It’s a very nice poster though.
