I'll sum up this World Cup: Penalty for you, penalty for me, penalty for him, penalty for the penalty, penalty, penalty!!! Seriously, something needs to be done. Football has turned into penalty ball. I hear what you're saying Helmut83 . It does seem like the competition's gone 'penalty crazy'.
But...
The World Cup is (and has been for many years) covered from virtually every angle by cameras. Up until recently the only authority was the referee. Players took advantage of this. If the ref couldn't see an infringement, and it was missed by a linesman, then certain players behaved unprofessionally.
We could see what was going on though. And, how would it have looked to children who love football? Their heroes committing fouls and getting away with it.
As I see it, VAR has worked. If it hadn't existed, South Korea's first goal yesterday would've been incorrectly disallowed.
Video and electronic assistance is used in other sports - tennis and rugby, being two big ones that come to mind. Sooner or later football (or soccer, if you prefer) had to catch up with the real world.
Several years ago, in World Cup play-off, Thierry Henry clearly handled the ball just before France scored against the Republic. He even admitted it after the game. The ref didn't see it, so the goal was allowed. The entire television audience saw exactly what happened.
In big competitions VAR is needed. It will identify more real penalty situations. Ultimately, it's fairer in the long run. And in yesterday's match, it added a new facet of drama to an already absorbing game.
Just my opinion, of course
tremblinwilbury , let me insist about this because I probably wasn't clear enough the last time: I celebrate the arrival of VAR. I love it. I'm most in favour of using the technology to prevent those unfair situations you are talking about, and I think it is proving a magnificent tool to assist the referees, who obviously can't see everything, and I also think it's here to stay. So I have no problem with VAR whatsoever, that's why I didn't even mention it in my comment about the penalties. So I agree with you in everything you said (plus I watch a lot of rugby too and video ref there works wonderfully). What I have a problem with is the interpretation that referees make of certain plays and their mentality (probably instigated by the FIFA) of giving soft penalties everywhere, VAR or no VAR. The penalties in Argentina vs Iceland, France vs Australia, Nigeria vs Argentina, Iran vs Portugal, Sweden vs Mexico, Costa Rica vs Switzerland, always for the teams I mentioned in first place, were atrocious, and there were several others I don't remember now. In the case of Costa Rica, it was a foul from the Costa Rican player and they called it the other way round. Again, VAR is always a positive contribution because it allows the referees to review the action, but too often they make the incorrect call all the same, even when given the chance of reviewing the action. So my problem is with the referees and their penalty-happy criteria. Hope my point is clearer now. PS: I recall the Henry hand that knocked Ireland out of the qualifier, it was quite a big scandal and commented a lot even down here.

Clever England. By losing they've fallen into the much easier half of the bracket. They could even make it up to the final through that part. Belgium, by winning, fell into the same half of the bracket as Brazil, France, Argentina, Uruguay, etc... The highlight of such a weird game was Batshuayi's blooper right after the goal. Hilarious.

Yeah, it was a boring game because no one wanted to win. Apparently Januzaj wasn't informed of the situation and scored that great goal. For anyone who hasn't seen Batshuayi's blooper that made him worldwide trending topic: I've never seen karma counterattack so fast...

Ah, I see where you're coming from Helmut83.
With every World Cup we get slightly different interpretations on events on the Field by FIFA. Besides the increased number of penalties, this year, offsides aren't flagged up unless they're absolutely obvious.
Penalties are an easy way for teams to score. Unless they miss, of course...

I can't say I'm following the World Cup, the last tournament I followed was France '98 (I had groovy yellow t-shirt with a parrot creature on it! I loved it so much), but I have to say that I don't buy all the England hype. Just because we won against Panama doesn't mean we are a great side. It was Panama's first World Cup I hear so we might as well have been playing a bunch of schoolboys. And last night's match didn't prove anything either because we lost. At least if we'd come top of the group we could have gone home with something to be proud of. I think Columbia's going to win anyway because nothing I have seen of our team has displayed anything wonderful yet. We're just cruising.
The guy getting hit by the ball from the goalpost is classic.
I'd really like Gareth Southgate to do well though. He deserves some glory. I remember Euro 96 (I have that t-shirt too!), it was a couple of the best weeks of my life so it hurt really bad when Gaz missed that penalty . Come on Gareth, atone for the past!

I don't know much about soccer, but Monsieur Henry is very good-looking! And he speaks French, too! Ooh là là! Edit: I took a minute to look him up, and I remember his name now from 1998, when everyone was talking about France's World Cup victory, and he was on that team then. It's coming back to me now. He's 40. Looking good, sir!

After clicking on it, it blanks out. Nothing's there. Pathetic FIFA has been claiming copyright over the blooper so no one else could play it but them. Here it is on YouTube: And on Twitter: At least the player laughed at it too on Twitter and made an elegant comeback: And the Manchester City account made fun of it too (the guy on goal is Kevin De Bruyne, Belgian too and Batshuayi's teammate):
