Practically everyone in Argentina drinks mate, it's the national drink here and in Uruguay too (never heard it called a "tea" though, I'd call it an infusion). But it's also usually disliked by foreigners because of it's bitter taste, so I am really surprised that it caught among a few Englishmen at Tottenham. Good on Poch for spreading it.

Yeah, what a game (and forget about a final being this entertaining). CR7 is a monster, his teammates didn't help him much and he managed to get a draw against Spain all by himself. Also, I think Spain's tiki-taka is a bit washed up by now, teams seem to be finding ways around it. Although they were very superior, they didn't create many chances and they could even have lost it in the end.
One of your candidates, Uruguay, started with a win.

vlogdance, I was still checking Horacewimp forms when he left for his trip. A few shaky answers. Like this one, in section 1000, sub B, number 1000, paragraph 1000, it asks "Will you be drinking and how much? H W wrote, "Upon my honor and my Jeff Lynne autograph, not a single drop of liquor will pass me lips." Well by the time I read this he was already on his way home.

I don't follow sports at all, and I'm completely clueless about most things sports-related. but it's nice to see that France is doing well. It gives me something (however weak) to say about sports in France to my students who are sports enthusiasts. I do remember the World Cup in 1998 when they won on home turf, and Zidane scored the winning goal. That was huge!

Our American friends will need to swot up on football, you are hosting the competition in 2026 along with Mexico and Canada.

Shameful Argentina. Not even with the help of the referee. Good thing Messi missed the penalty, I wouldn't have enjoyed winning like that (FIFA has made it clear since early that they plan on keep on helping the big teams, like they have always done). Congrats to Iceland, yet another great deed by this fantastic group of players.

Unlucky Helmut ... Iceland are indeed brilliant at defending, it is a much under-appreciated art these days. They are so skilled at their positioning it nullifies attacks brilliantly. I was thinking about you all through the game, you have forwards that would make any international team, Not sure about that keeper of your though

I was thinking about you all through the game, you have forwards that would make any international team, Not sure about that keeper of your though Funny, I remembered what you said each time Gunnarsson sent those crazy throw-ins into the box. What a brute! I had seen many Iceland games, since the Euro qualifiers, then the Euro and then the WC qualifiers. The way they move as a block is amazing, and today they displayed it again. It allows them to compete against much bigger countries with a much larger selection base. In the end they got tired and Argentina's talent made us dominate more, but still they managed to get the draw. Our keeper used to be good when he played for Boca, but now he is playing in a far away country which ruins players.
