My review (better late than never... I think I'm going to start a motion for CDs to start on mondays, because Sundays are the day I have most time to sit down and write my reviews):
I really, really liked this album. It's pretty straightforward rock in many aspects, and so easy sounding at first listen, but not all straightforward music is interesting and this album really is. I don't like David Bowie, but these guys must have had good material of their own and I love the sound, so typical of the early ‘70s. I also love the fact that it has many upbeat songs. Up to now, for my taste it’s the best of the albums I have listened to in this section, without a doubt.
On the cons hand, lack of variety or widety is, in my opinion, it’s biggest defect. Most of the material (except for Ralph’s track and the final ballad) has the same sound and moves in similar levels. Of course, that doesn’t prevent the album from being a very good one.
- Sweet Jane: I wouldn't have started an album with a song which is a huge anthem of rock n' roll. If I wanted to present my own personal material, the best way to start wouldn't be placing other artist's classics in the 1st place of the album. Other than it's ubication in the CD, I haven't got any other bad thing to say from this song. Very good cover.
- Momma's little jewel: good song. That riff makes it. Very groovy, and that piano goes very well with it.
- All the young dudes: another good cover of a classic.
- Sucker: pleasant track, with some nice bass work on it and effectively placed powerchords. I don’t like the use of sax in this song though and I agree with others in that it goes on for a bit too long.
- Jerkin’ Crocus: as has been said, sounds a lot (maybe too much) like Brown Sugar (and Ma-ma-ma belle). I can’t give them much credit here for not being original, which doesn’t mean that a good rock n roll song like this one isn’t a pleasure listening.
- One of the boys: it isn’t very different from “sucker”. In any case, these doesn’t sound like a stolen idea so you’ve got to credit them. It’s a decent straight rocker which isn’t particularly special and a bit too long. And those screams at the end, haha…
- Soft Ground: has something of the Beatles’ “Come together” when it hits that V chord. I quite like it. I love the fact that they tried doing a dirtier, darker rock song on this one. Good use of the guitar too.
- Ready for love/ After lights: interesting track, the one that sounds a bit more complicated in my opinion. I guess they are the kind that you have to listen to them many times to get a better grasp of it’s essence. The voice is too low (in terms of volume) in my opinion.
- Sea diver: a good ballad with nice strings arrangements. I like it most when it acquires some strength, but it is too short there. A good choice to close the album.
