Wow, that's a whole lot of snow, eloneen! Any idea on how many inches? Is it unfrequent to have snow in your neck of the woods? How are your shoveling abilities? Are you closing the gap on the master BSJ?

Wow, that's a whole lot of snow, eloneen ! Any idea on how many inches? Is it unfrequent to have snow in your neck of the woods? How are your shoveling abilities? Are you closing the gap on the master BSJ ? Some areas in our city had almost a foot by last night, and it was still coming down! I think it stopped after about 14 hours or so. The local weather report this morning says that we got about 10 inches. We usually get some snow each winter, but this amount is very unusual. It's really beautiful, though! Our local area was among the worst affected. We still have power, fortunately. About 10,000 households in our area have lost power. We are not going anywhere. Hubby tried to clear the driveway and the sidewalk in front of the house every hour or so as it was coming down, but he gave up after a while. We are not going to do much shoveling, if any. We are waiting for the weekend thaw. There is not really anywhere we need to go, and road conditions are very dangerous. The governor declared a state of emergency state-wide and encouraged people to stay home and off the roads. There were lots of terrible accidents. Even a champion NASCAR driver had an accident! ( Horacewimp Do you follow NASCAR as well as Formula 1 racing? It's huge here in NC!) www.cbsnews.com/news/dale-earnhardt-jr-crashes-in-snowy-weather-after-helping-other-driver/

I don't follow NASCAR eloneen but i'm aware of how big it is in the USA. There was a demonstration by two NASCAR's at the Auto show I went to last weekend, one was driven by Bobby Labonte.

Here's a photo of the same location, taken this morning at 9:30 AM, when it was a toasty 15F with sunny skies! Very pretty! Attachment Deleted

How are your shoveling abilities? Are you closing the gap on the master BSJ ? When it came to shovelling, 18th century Birmingham led the way.

Great pic eloneen, love the blue sky as a backdrop. Looks like the kids were out in it judging by the footprints (or was that you?....) Thanks! It was definitely not me out there! It was the neighbors. Hubby said he saw the two little kids next door with their parents yesterday evening playing out in the snow in the back yard and building a snowman out in front of their house. The little girl in the house on the other side was out with her dad building a snowman, too, but since they did it so early in the afternoon, it got completely swamped with the snow that fell afterwards. We have pretty much stayed indoors since yesterday afternoon. It's all very pretty from the windows and the front and back doors!

Snow update: It's melting somewhat now, but it will all refreeze tonight. Out in front of our house, it looks so-so, but there's been very little visible change in the back! No school tomorrow. Too many roads are still not clear enough for safe travel. I think I might venture out in the afternoon tomorrow for a few errands. Neighbors have told us which places around us are safe to drive. I'm sure I'll find a way to pass the time.

It was safe to get out and drive in our area for a few errands today. I spoke with one colleague on the phone and she said that she got 12" of snow in her area. Another one said that she was not able to get out of her neighborhood safely this morning , so I guess we were just lucky in the part of town where we live. The school parking lot had not been plowed by this afternoon. Despite my son's fervent statements to the contrary, things will be fine by Monday, and we will be back in school. It was 51F this afternoon when I went out and the next two days will be even warmer. That's NC winters for you!

How can it go from days of continuous snowing to relatively mild temperatures??? It was about 14 hours of snowing (which was enough!), and as for the mild temperatures, I'm just happy we have them!! I cannot give a satisfactory meteorological explanation, but normal temperatures here this time of year range typically from the 20s during the night to somewhere in the 40s during the day. Sometimes we go higher and lower on both ends... That's NC winters for you!
