January 15 would be the 89th birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and since 1986 we have a national holiday to honor him. He famously said "I have a dream," and outlined his vision for racial justice and harmony in the US, which he ultimately lost his life pursuing. Sometimes I think "The dream is gone. The dream is just a memory." But I remind myself of the sacrifices of Dr. King, other civil rights leaders, and many of my ancestors, and I remember my good fortune to have been spared what they endured. Although Dr. King's vision is still a dream, I still "hold on tight" and long to see it realized in my lifetime. Happy Birthday, Dr. King! I saw this at the King Center in Atlanta last year, and had to get one. Fitting for the tea-loving language teacher that I am!

After Trump's first year in office, blacks, Hispanics, and women have more jobs than ever. So, as a conservative Republican who supported Trump, I'm proud of the success towards MLK's dream. Now we just need to get more equal rights, equal time for the unborn children, to have their right to life, which MLK would have surely supported. And for the several children of gay parents, who wish they had their real mom and dad, but are forced to remain silent about it. Jim

Early morning, April 4
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky
Free at last, they took your life
They could not take your pride
