Ok, I'm being a bit cheeky with the fifth selection. It was a re-recording of the 1969 original - almost. The majority of those who took part took to the stage in a revival of the show at the Lyceum Theatre in 1996. This was no longer a hippy musical - this production grabbed you by the scruff of your neck, and didn't let go. EVERYONE who saw that production raved about it. This is the recording that does it justice. It grabs you from the deep deep growl of the guitar in the intro to the Overture...

And 5½? After abandoning Phantom Of The Opera 2, ALW took some of the melodies, added lyrics from Ben Elton, and gave us his rockiest musical since Superstar. I think the link leads you to the 'clean' version. The original had a few naughty words that would've been common in Belfast in the 70's (and probably still are!). This recording (naughty or clean) deserves to be heard.

I grew up listening to it. My mom has always loved it. She has a lovely voice and would sing all the songs as she listened to it when I was a kid. She and my youngest sister-in-law, who is also a big fan, went to see a production of it in the DC area earlier this year.

In our household, we had a kind of "peace and love," social justice (but not quite hippie) Christian orientation growing up, so JCS fit right in.

I'm a staunch ELO fan. And I'm still Catholic

I love JCS! I'd take the 1996 recording too - my 1996 SCHOOL recording . We did the show for our school play and I was in the chorus. The highlights were an energetic Simon Zealotes performance (the boy who played him is now a professional break-dancer I believe), the lad who played Judas and a stage hand who was overly enthusiastic with the dry ice.
