Thanks to all of those military veterans who have served to protect us all, and the rights and freedoms we enjoy in free societies across the world. Thanks also to the families who have sacrificed and supported them so that they could serve.

That's OK. There's always been a predominant power in the history of the world and I'm OK with it being United States now. I don't buy that they do anything for the sheer love of liberty or for altrusim, but truth is depite their own interests they let other countries enjoy a great degree of freedom and autonomy. The other options for predominance would be much worse I think.

Helmut83 I'm also thinking of those who serve to defend and rescue during disasters - like after hurricanes and earthquakes, and protect and defend during times of internal crisis -like the National Guard troops who accompanied black school children to school during the Civil Rights Movement. There is and has been hypocrisy for sure. My dad served in England and France in WW2 and came home to legal segregation and discrimination in his own land. It was disgraceful. At any given time, whether we are doing it right or doing it not so well (which is often), I am encouraged by the actual ideals of my country and remember that we have the privilege and responsibility of holding it accountable to living up to its ideals. I think that that is the primary source of any greatness we can claim. Eloneen the Patriot has spoken. Drop the mic!
