From Wikipedia... The main setting of the series is the eponymous mining spaceship Red Dwarf,[10] which is 6 miles (9.7 km) long, 4 miles (6.4 km) tall, and 3 miles (4.8 km) wide and is operated by the Jupiter Mining Corporation.[11] In the first episode set sometime in the late 22nd century, an on-board radiation leak of cadmium II kills everyone except lowest-ranking technician Dave Lister, who is in suspended animation at the time, and his pregnant cat, Frankenstein, who is safe in the cargo hold.[12] Following the accident, the ship's computer Holly keeps Lister in stasis until the radiation levels return to normal – a process that takes three million years.[12] Lister therefore emerges as the last human being in the universe – but not alone on-board the ship.[13] His former bunkmate and immediate superior Arnold Judas Rimmer (a character plagued by failure) is resurrected by Holly as a hologram to keep Lister sane. At the same time, a creature known only as Cat is the last member on board of Felis sapiens, a race of humanoid felines that evolved in the ship's hold from Lister's cat, Frankenstein, and her kittens during the 3 million years that Lister was in stasis.[13]

I can second Timeblue's enthusiasm, it's a great series with a sense of humour which is right up this forum's street

I don't know how the humour will translate to the Americans (and indeed the Aussies and Argentinians!) on here, also to me,the standard hasn't dropped in 30 years...

I appreciate British humor. It's dry, absurd, not obvious, understated sarcasm. I saw Ricky Gervais "The Office" before the American version. I thought ours was awful at first. The same with "House OF Cards". I think the British version is better (Brought it on VHS! And we've re-watched it numerous times). I think Ian Richardson is the ideal FU. That sly, evil, Mona Lisa, smile.

I was a fan of RD from day 1 - although I must admit that nowadays I find the program somewhat calmer. I guess we've all slowed down a bit in 30 years....
I miss the little robots from the first few series.
The missus (who is a great fan of detective shows) couldn't understand why I used to laugh so much at the character of Dwayne Myers from "Death in Paradise" (played by Danny John-Jules, or Cat as we know him). Nice to see him in a role where he doesn't have to lick the back of his hand (much).
Kryten (Richard Llewellyn) of course went on to success in Scrapheap Challenge, alongside the very attractive Lisa Rogers (who would later bare all for a program about vaginas).
Rimmer (Chris Barrie) had his other moment of fame as Brittas; nowadays he narrates car-crash videos.
It strikes me that Red Dwarf is a bit like ELO; the secret pleasure that you don't tell anyone about 'cause it isn't quite cool.....
I agree about the theme music - but of course Howard Goodall is a great composer.
I must admit I even remember the lyrics....
