It seems like a lot of groups have a lot of great songs; but not one that is THEE song of songs of theirs, like how "Stairway to Heaven" is for Led Zeppelin.
Got me wondering, what would ELO's "Stairway to Heaven" track be?
And no cop-outs by saying "the whole Concerto for a Rainy Day".
I'm asking for one song. Trying to think of one myself, hmmm. The one ELO song that really stands out and shines above the rest?

I know it's got some baggage for us fans but Mr Blue Sky is such a wonderful song and it's got everything, the huge theme, the chugging rock n' roll, the bombastic orchestration. I think the same about Standin' In The Rain - the two songs are opposite sides of the same coin. It would be between the two of them for me. Leaning towards MBS.

Within the past ten years or so, I'd say it's been "Mr. Blue Sky". Before that, I think "Don't Bring Me Down" was the song most identifiable with ELO.
By the way, I don't think "Stairway to Heaven" is Zep's best song. "The Rain Song" is far superior.

Easy call for me (pun intended). For me it will always and forever be "Telephone Line," the first ELO song I fell in love with, from the first ELO album I ever heard. TL is widely known, loved by casual and devoted fans, and it has lots of those distinctive ELO features- beautiful melody, lush strings, call and response vocals, sad love story, etc.

I think I'm agreeing with eloneen on "Telephone Line" right now, for my part.

I thinking the first and second song on Eldorado. "Eldorado" is a great build up that slides into the next genius song "Midnight On The Water". Though the actual name of the second song is "Can't Get it Out of My Head". Jim

I'd agree with Chippa that Stairway to Heaven isn't Zep's best track too, but it's a song you always expected them to play and when they did the whole crowd would cheer it, serious and casual fans alike. So for that reason I'd say it has to be Mr Blue Sky for ELO. Personally I'd prefer Wild West Hero or Twilight

'MBS' for the world. 'Tightrope' for the fans.

If you're in Argentina: Last Train to London.

The whole Concerto for a Rainy Day.
Ahahaah, just joking! Can't choose one to be honest. Though I guess it's probably Mr. Blue Sky.

If you're in Argentina: Last Train to London. Well, I'm in Argentina and to me LTTL it's still corny disco stuff. I don't think ELO has an own "Stairway to heaven" because no ELO song has a structure like that, with different parts chained one after the other. I could think of other bands having their own "Stairway to Heaven" though. For example, the Beatles have "You never give me your money" (by the way, for me their best song), which was made by putting together 3 different songs, or "Happiness is a warm gun". Queen has "Bohemian Rhapsody" and, to a certain extent, "Innuendo" (although that one would be more similar to "Kashmir"). But the song I could relate most to STH from any band I can think of is Guns n Roses' "Estranged". Musically, it's completely different, but the whole concept of it seems to be the same than STH.

Define ELOs 'Stairway to Heaven' song.... for me STH is one of Leds more average songs and it's overplayed far too much (give me Kashmir every time) So to that end, Mr Blue Sky fits the bill for me as you hear it far too much. If you want MY ELO defining song then I'd have to say something like 'Hello My Old Friend', 'Eldorado Overture' leading into 'Can't Get It Out Of My Head' or maybe 'Ocean Breakup/King Of The Universe' ELO are ELO, we don't need to be compared to other bands to see what songs are 'our version of theirs'
