Remember those shop dummies that came to life in the old version of Dr Who? It terrified me and I was mentally scarred for life. I'm shuddering now just writing this. I still can't walk past certain shop windows today.
Oh yeah! Scared the willies out of me at the time. Luckily I lived on a farm, and the nearest town was so small that none of the shops had any shop dummies (apart from the staff!), so it was months before I had to face any.
The problem with kids nowadays is that they are so world-knowledgeable that scaring them with boogie-monsters is rather difficult. The 'angels' episodes is the only one (of the recent lot) that even came close.

Like James Bond, the Dr is a figure not a real person. If we are supposed to believe Connery can turn into Moore and Eccleston into Tennant then we can believe in the gender swap. I hope one day we'll get a female Bond but sadly I expect she'll take her clothes off a lot and that will be the reason men will welcome a gender change there.
I was hoping that we'd get Idris Elba as the next James Bond, but there are people who can't get their minds around there being a black man playing Bond. Elba's gorgeous, he's British, he's smooth, and he's a great actor...so why not? I'd love that!!

Wasn't George Lazenby an Aussie? and of course Sean Connery was Scottish so there is a chance that one day 'James' could be black or mixed race...

But that "one day" may come when Idris Elba is "too old," or there will be some other excuse , and there won't be someone as perfect for that role as he is.... or as handsome.... and it will be another generation before it happens. I'm not very optimistic about these things....

I agree that Idris is a great choice; but he may be a bit heavy or serious for the role. And probably too expensive. Are you accusing the BBC of not knowing their Idris from their Elba?

babyzoomer I think he would have great fun with the role. In fact, I think he would relish it, and really play it up very well. I'm sure there would be a way to negotiate the contract in a way that would benefit everyone involved... that is, if they really wanted him...

The role used to carry a great stigma (kid's show!) and also the fear of being typecast was a 'thing' - however nowadays the Beeb only lets them do a few series before 'recycling'.
I'm secretly glad they chose a woman - the missus and I had a bet on it......

I was talking about Elba as Bond (on a tangent---I never do that smiley-music025 ) but I think you're more on-topic and talking about Dr. Who, right?

Oh dear #eloneen - my apologies for not looking carefully enough. Honestly you and I should get married, we are sooo bad at communicating! (Not serious!).
Actually, (looking at it) my remarks apply almost as well to Bert Broccoli's 007 franchise!
No reason why Bond can't be a woman... (shut up Ian Fleming, remember you wrote Shitty Titty Bong Bang!)
Again Mea culpa!

lol No problem babyzoomer ...It happens-- like me in the Shoutbox over the weekend, addressing an answer to someone other than the person who had asked me a question. OOPS! Anyway, I might actually watch Dr. Who with Mr. Eloneen to see what the new female Dr. is like. Hubby will weigh in with his opinion, but I don't really have any degree of devotion to any TV series (I mainly watch the news and the odd documentary these days), so it's mild interest at best on my part.

I'm with you; I can't seem to engage (as in give a damn) with the silly little fictions on the telly anymore; my life has enough drama already! Most of the comedies are sad and tiring; and I'm on the wagon, too! Luckily I have my family too keep me busy.....
