Here is an excerpt from the UK quiz show "The Link". Four young contestants have never heard of Jeff Lynne.
They think Brian May was in the Traveling Wilburys and the lead singer of ELO.
Have they been living under a rock all there short lives?

It's not just the youth of today who don't know who Jeff is, quite a few people my age and older are baffled when I mention him.
I expect he'd be secretly pleased though, he doesn't seem like a man who craves attention.

elophile , what should we do with these people...? OK, let's not act as if I were the encyclopedia of music, I've only been an ELO fan since I fully discovered Jeff's music a few years ago, but even way before that I knew who were the 5 members of the Wilburys and whom Jeff Lynne was. Either I'm having an unreasonable deja vu or we have commented on this incident before, have we? It's not just the youth of today who don't know who Jeff is, quite a few people my age and older are baffled when I mention him. When I went to the UK the people I met typically asked me what I was doing there, as happens with any visitor. I answered "on holidays" to make it short, but if they asked a bit more then I said I had travelled to attend a concert of a musician I was a big fan of. Then they asked whom, and when I said "Jeff Lynne, of Electric Light Orchestra" the majority of them were baffled, as happens to you, Uno; and they were people of all ages. A few of them were familiar with the name, but not much more than that. I was expecting to get a higher "knowledge ratio" than in Argentina because, well, Jeff Lynne and ELO are British, but the ratio was pretty similar. There was a very honorable exception though: an American couple, ironically enough. They were really young and already married (what's the need?), and both of them had known Jeff Lynne via George Harrison because they were huge Beatles fan (the subject came out because I had a Beatles' backpack). I asked a bit and found out that while they weren't rabid fans their knowledge of Jeff and his musical output was pretty solid, so they instantly won my respect -as I won theirs because I'm a huge Beatles fans too- and we went for lunch together.

It's bad enough when some people don't know The Beatles let alone ELO and Jeff!

It's bad enough when some people don't know The Beatles let alone ELO and Jeff! Have you come across people who don't know the Beatles? In England, on top of that?
