Here are a few photos of Bev Bevan when he was in his first professional band, "Denny Laine and the Diplomats". These photos were taken in 1962 or 1963. Denny Laine left the Diplomats in 1964 to form "The Moody Blues", He left the Moody's in 1966 to do solo work. In 1967 Laine formed "The Electric String Band" which was based around a string quartet with guitar, bass and percussion. It's possible that Laine's Electric String Band gave Roy Wood the idea for "The Electric Light Orchestra". Laine later became a founding member of the short lived super-group "Balls" with Trevor Burton and Steve Gibbons. In the 1970's he joined Paul and Linda McCartney in "Wings".
Bev left "The Diplomats" to join future "Move" band mates, Carl Wayne and Christopher (Ace) Kefford in Carl Wayne and The Vikings. Here is Bev performing with Denny Laine and the Diplomats.

Aw look at Denny and Bev! Denny a very talented musician (love his singing of The Moody Blues cover of Go Now) and his work with Wings (due to my love of Macca!) Bev must be a really talented drummer to join a group at such a young age!

I've read a lot about the Diplomats, and how Denny used to be teased a lot, but never actually heard any music until now.

Here's Denny Laine's self penned solo single "Say You Don't Mind" from 1966.
It wasn't a hit for Denny, but Colin Blunstone had a big hit with it in 1972.

I love Denny's own version of this but I love Colin's too!
I wonder if Denny Laine's Electric String Band gave Jeff ideas about band names?

I prefer Colins version,it's more stripped back and simpler and the strings add just enough to it..

When Bev was younger he didn't just have a girls name (Beverley), he had a girls hairstyle too.
These days his hairstyle looks like one of Ken Dodd's cast off wigs.

He talks about his early sufferings in life with having the name Beverley in the 1981 documentary 'Profiles in Rock', and how he learnt to look after himself at school.

I bet Bev isn't very 'tickled' by this... A bit of a trooper is Sir Ken, pushing 90 now,he still tours and some of his shows have been known to last for up to 3 hours.
