considering i am a massive ELO fan, i am also a massive fan of the Pixies, to some people who see music as being about whats considered cool and hip i am seen as an Eagles and REO Speedwagon fan. both of the latter i have no time for, although a few songs here and there are not bad. so apart from being a massive ELO fan, is there any band that is so different that gives you the same joy?

I love the Pixies, especially Frank Black.
Probably the most unusual or non-ELO-like band I like is Flogging Molly. I'm a sucker for amped up Irish folk punk, and they do it better than anyone.

- Apples in Stereo... so unusual you never heard about them.
- Fabulous Thunderbirds: not a huuuge fan but I like many things they did.
Not many more to tell the truth.

I’m not sure if it’s so very different but I’m also a Procol Harum fan. Their music gives me (almost!) as much joy as Jeff Lynne’s. But the most un-ELO music I love, and the band that dangerously led me away from the ELO path, is The Clash. I didn’t think it possible to love punk and ELO but believe me it is. Joe Strummer and Jeff Lynne are both geniuses of their respective fields.

I also LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Pixies. I went to see them back in the day playing in a small bar somewhere in Pennsylvania. Kim Deal was smoking a big cigar while she was playing her bass and all my male friends were gaga over her. Most of other bands I used to listen to back then have fallen by the wayside but I still love the Pixies.

Kim Deal is very cool indeed! i wish i got into them the first time around. but nevermind, i've played their albums enough to last me 2 lifetimes and i still enjoy them. Electric Light Orchestra has really been the only other band who i play the hell out of.

Frank Black's solo stuff is brilliant! just when i started getting into FB and the Catholics he got Pixies back together lol so i managed to see them live once thank god. i saw Frank twice. the first time was on the Bluefinger tour where he was doing an Iggy Pop and marching around the stage without a guitar. that was a great gig and very unusual. the second time was a year later with the SVN FNGRS tour when he called it an opera and played all the songs from that album and Bluefinger. i made up for seeing my heroes live considering a lot of mine are dead and gone.

Unusual meaning that they don't sound like ELO? A lot! Mike Ness and Social Distortion being a prime example.

There's a guy named Charlie Peacock who in a broad sense is pop, but overall is hard to categorize. Total genius, and I like a lot of his songs, this one is his most famous song.

Besides being a fool for Muse (Don't worry, I won't start, you'll never get to bed) I do love the Divine Comedy. And as far as quirky goes, Hayseed Dixie always make me smile - once you've heard AC/DC and other metal greats done country stylee you'll never go back
