Mr. eloneen and I are planning a short little getaway to Virginia Beach for a few days to celebrate our anniversary in July, and the day BEFORE we are scheduled to arrive, there is to be a FREE ELO tribute concert at a beachfront park that hosts free concerts all summer!! hamptonroads.eventful.com/events/new-world-record-elo-tribute-/E0-001-103773366-1Does anyone else know anything at all about this? There are no details listed about the performers. It has been a challenge for us to get this trip arranged as it is, and some arrangements are still pending. I'm not sure how I'm going to make this happen, as I'm supposed to be part of a team finishing up a project for my summer job that day, but I want to be in Virginia Beach for the concert! It's free, so why not, right? Wish me luck! (Oops, in my excitement, I failed to put this in the ELO Tribute Bands thread. Does it need to be moved Horacewimp ? No hurry, of course, enjoying Wembley is definitely #1 right now! wiggle )

OK- Duh! The name of the group is A New World Record. I just went to their webpage and watched the video for their cover of "Evil Woman." It should be fun! And it's FREE! anewworldrecord.com/I'll report back on it if I attend, of course!

I've not heard of them. I hope you can pull it together and make the concert. Be interesting to see how many people are a true ELO fan (wearing t-shirts, etc. singing to all songs) and are aware of the rise of ELO. Of course you will be the one super fan there!

BSJ I'm predicting that a lot of people will just be looking for some random free entertainment for the evening, and/or will show up at the park with no idea about who the performers are. It's a very touristy town and this is high season, so it will be just "go with the flow, we're on vacation" for a lot of folks. After all, I just stumbled upon this concert by accident. When I saw that this park on the waterfront had free concerts, I just checked the calendar for the dates we would be there, and voilà, there it was! Great luck! Even if they're not phenomenal, it will be fun anyway! I'm packing my ELO tee shirts, and will probably sing so much and so loudly at the concert that I will embarrass my dear sweet husband! These are the sacrifices we make for the ones we love ! I'm crossing my fingers we can make it happen!

This is what I'm thinking too. Free concert, show up no matter what band is playing. ELO lovers will be made. A photo of you wearing an ELO shirt dancing on the sand. Golden! Me toes are crossed.

It's free, so why not, right? It's a go!! I was able to finish up work early on the project before the long holiday weekend, and was able to make arrangements for my mother and son to be suitably entertained and looked after while we go to VB to celebrate our anniversary! So, I'll get back to you all with pictures and some thoughts about the concert next week!

I went to the A New World Record Tribute concert in Virginia Beach earlier this week, and really enjoyed the show! I'm not known for brevity but I will try to sum it up without rambling too much! The concert was in an outdoor venue and it was raining (especially during the second show), so that had an effect on attendance. There were about 100-150 people there. I was the only one with an ELO tee shirt and definitely the only one who knew the words to all the songs. They did two shows --7:00 and 9:00. We were there for the sound check, their opening band, and both shows, which had the same setlist. We were right up front and were seated in the covered area for the first set, and right up front and on our feet for the second set. We were able to meet the leader of the band, Nigel Holland (synths, backing vocals) in between sets, and he happily agreed to a picture of the band with me after the show. I also talked briefly with the keyboard player/backing vocalist and female vocalist/backing vocalist. They were all very friendly, nice people, and excited to hear that I was an ELO "superfan" and that I clearly knew all the words to all the songs they were playing, and was enjoying the show. I sang my little heart out and waved my arms for the "woo"s in "Tightrope" , and all kinds of other fun stuff like that, especially during the second show. Some might call it dancing , but I know that I can't dance... They opened with "Tightrope", followed by "Telephone Line" and "Rockaria," all of which were excellent! The operatic solo by the young woman (Bree) was great. I can't remember the exact order of the rest of the set, but these were the other songs: "All Over the World," "Livin' Thing," "Turn to Stone," "Evil Woman," "Don't Bring Me Down," "Jungle" (can you believe it Helmut83 ?!!), and "Mr. Blue Sky," which was the finale. They are from the Virginia Beach area and they all seem to be excellent musicians. They are a 12 piece band, but the four string players did not play in this outdoor concert because of the humidity and rain. Nigel Holland filled in on the synths. This is my first tribute concert, so I did not know quite what to expect. ANWR is a fairly new band, but based on what I've seen of other tribute bands online, they are as good, if not better, than some of the established ELO tribute bands. Nigel Holland is very enthusiastic and energetic, and seems determined to see this band succeed. I thought they were great, but being a new band, I think that they are still working on some things. "All Over the World" was pretty good, but a bit tinny, and they need to work a little more on the instrumental ending for "Mr. Blue Sky." The lead singer had a little bit of trouble with just a few of the high notes, and a couple of the lyrics (but then again so does Jeff sometimes!), but overall he did a very fine job of singing. I think they did justice to the songs they played. They had a couple of technical problems during the second set, but they kept going and did fine. My favorites: I love "Tightrope" as an opener, and they did it very well. "Don't Bring Me Down" is just plain fun live, and they did a really good job with "Jungle." I clearly stood out in the audience, being the main one singing along with every single song, and having a fabulous time. Even hubby enjoyed the show! He recognized most of the songs and thought they did a really good job across the board. I think it made him happy seeing me so completely "in the zone" and loving this show. Great show, highly recommended! You can see a few of their videos online at www.anewworldrecord.com . I'll have to post the pictures in a separate message, or I'll never get this message posted!

Glad they didn’t disappoint. I would have stayed for the second show, too. I think that now this band has a ‘super groupie’! What with your shirt matching their logo there can be no other explanation! You planning on starting a fan club? I’ll join! Was that Stevie Ray Vaughn I saw on stage? Chuckled when saw ‘Jeff’ on their video. They do sound very good!

Great telling of the tale eloneen, sounds like you did us all proud with your epic song knowledge and dancing. You do look uber-cool too in your t-shirt and shades, surely nobody looked better that day?

I've seen several ELO tribute bands on Youtube and these guys are the most impressive so far. Thank you eloneen for sharing with us!
