Sgt Pepper may have been the first Beatles album I ever heard all the way through but it isn't my favourite. I much prefer Rubber Soul and Abbey Road. One of the things that bother me about the LP is the fact that the concept of the album - Sgt Pepper's band - doesn't last the whole album.
My favourite songs from it have changes as I have got older. I like 'Lucy' and 'Mr Kite' a lot more now and I really like 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)'. Perhaps the best song for me though is 'She's Leaving Home' which is gorgeous.
'Within You Without You' isn't George's best but it's still good. The track I think works better on the Love album mixed with 'Tomorrow Never Knows'.
Whatever anyone thinks of 'WYWY' it's surely a crime that whenever anybody talks of Sgt Pepper they leave George out of any praise. Not only should George get his share of mentions as much as Ringo for 'With a Little Help from My Friends' but 'WYWY' is an important song, just as innovative as anything else on Pepper.
If you don't believe me watch 'Sgt Pepper's Musical Revolution with Howard Goodall' www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08tb97f . Howard believes that the song is a radical mixture of east and west with George "co-opting the fundamental principals of Indian music". According to the programme George is just as inventive as Lennon/McCartney because the parts that construct the track are "unheard of in Indian music and western pop music; they are entirely of George's own making".
It might be an unpopular opinion but I'm not really all that fussed by 'A Day In The Life'. I loved it more when I didn't know many Beatles songs. I can't really say I like it as much as I'm supposed to. I get that it's creative, like the whole album, but perhaps Sgt Pepper suffers from too much creativity. A lot of new things happened in 1967. The Beatles changed direction with Pepper - from Beatlemania mop tops to serious artists - and a lot of other bands changed too and many new bands formed. It makes you wonder how music would have been had Pepper not happened. Would pop groups still be peddling early 60s music? Very few bands towards the end of the 60s remained the same. Pepper paved the way for experimentation which makes it an important album but doesn't necessarily make it the best album.
The cover - I always assumed it was a paper cut-out collage until a few years ago when I discovered they used life-size cut-outs and took a real photo.

Oh no who mentioned the dreaded Paul is dead hoax? Urgh don't get me started on it... The Paul is dead crap started in 1969 when they released Abbey Road. It's because of Paul being the only one walking barefoot across the road, that started it all off. As it can symbolise death. After that all started people started looking for other clues in The Beatles previous work, the most being Sgt Pepper such as the cover where there's a man who has his hand above Paul's head which is a sign of death and there's some apparent clues in some of the lyrics such as from A Day in the Life (he didn't notice that the lights had changed, he blew his mind out in a car...).
As for this album, I like it but it's not one of my favourites. Actually I think it is a bit overrated because it's classed as the beginning of when The Beatles really experimented with their musical sound. I disagree with that because I think it started with Revolver. I'm more of a fan of the 1965/66 era like Help!, Rubber Soul and Revolver, Revolver being my favourite. I mean you've got backward music on Revolver, psychedelic shit (bearing in mind this was when The Beatles, most notably John started taking LSD) all of which is pretty innovative of the time.
So my favourites off Sgt Pepper are probablyy: Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds- Don't care how much John says it's about a picture Julian did, it's about LSD listen to the lyrics! Getting Better She's Leaving Home When I'm Sixty Four Lovely Rita A Day in the Life
Yes most of these are Paul tracks, Paul is my favourite Beatle what can I say haha.
