Plenty to choose from but one I love is from Hotel California - "you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave" strange really because i'm not a fan of American rock as such but I love Don Henley for some reason...

Don't really like American rock, do you? Watch out, we 'Mercans are on to you now! There are so many lines I love, but one enduring favorite is from "Under Pressure" by David Bowie and Queen: "It's the terror of knowing what this world is about." (And, yes, I know, they're all Brits. ) For me, some of the dark or snarky lines from songs seem to stick with me the most, for whatever reason.

Another line that I love: "You're dressed to kill and guess who's dying?" from Roxy Music Dance Away...

See? we are good for somethings you know.... 2nd time today that I've offended you 'Mercans....! It's all in good fun! I'm just kidding, you know! Much of the music that I like is British. And, of course, I would not be on this forum without loving ELO!!

When I say 'American rock' I meant bands like Bon Jovi,Aerosmith,Poison..etc the whole 80's poodle rock scene.

I like some Aerosmith, but I basically agree with you about those other bands.
Although I wouldn't call Hall and Oates purely rock, I have always loved Daryl Hall's voice. I enjoy the variety in the Hall and Oates catalogue; from a folk sound in the early years (not really my favorite); a blue-eyed soul sound that was a trademark for them (love it); more of guitar focused rock sound for a couple of years (some of it was pretty good); doo-wop and very pop in the early 1980s (lots of fun to sing!!); disco-ish here and there (OK); and plenty of variety on just about any album (what I appreciate the most). We break out their 2007 Christmas album every year! It was great seeing Hall and Oates with ELO on the Time tour in 1981. I was in music heaven!!

Favorite Hall and Oates line: "The strong give up and move on, while the weak give up and stay," from one of my favorite songs by them "Do What You Want, Be What You Are." I have remembered that line a few times when I've decided to leave unacceptable work situations!

Some of my favourite cheery Muse lines are:
When I am gone, it won't be long before I disturb you in the dark
and
There's no countries left to love and cherish, I think I destroyed them all
and the immortal
You make me sick because I adore you so, I love all the dirty tricks and twisted games you play on me

Bonsoir unomusette ! Do you know that H&O song I mentioned? If you have not heard it, and you like DH's voice and soulful ballads, give it a listen. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I find it absolutely divine!! It's classic Daryl Hall, showing off his range with the vocals at the end.

Great question. A few that come to mind...
From "The Voice" by the Moody Blues-"with you arms around the future/and your back up against the past".
From Stevie Wonder's "You Haven't Done Nothin'" - "And We are sick and tired of hearing your song/tellin how you're gonna change right from wrong/but if you really wanna hear our views/you haven't done nothin" . Totally relevant, in 2017.
From Midnight Oil's "In The Valley" - "When my mother went down/it was a stiff arm from Hades/Life surprises and tears you like the southerly/She always welcomed the spring/ always welcomed the stranger/I don't see too many around like this."

Very soulful, I can picture you chilling out to this after a hard day conjugating irregular verbs

That's about right, I'd say. Sometimes, however, the verbs are the easy part!

Not the deepest, nor the most intellectual or poetical line in a song, I know, but since being a kid it called my attention "Dressed for Success", by Roxette, when it says "and in the dark, things happen faster".
