01. "Drive My Car" - Great riff and rhythm. Childish and immature lyrics with too much innuendo. Innuendo! *gasp!* Oh no! Next thing you know they'll be shooting pool and wearing tight trousers!

Talking about which, when is it that I should post my CD of the week? Hi Helmut, you can post it as soon as Sunday comes for you, whenever that is. If you decide you'd prefer to base it on some other time zone, no problem, with me, but just to give a simple answer, feel free whenever Sunday hits for you. Jim

Someone wrote that some songs are stereotypically Beatles I think you can talk about "stereotypically Beatles" during their first 6 albums, of which "Rubber Soul" is the last one, and even like that there were a lot of exceptions. From "Revolver" on I think there was no longer anything "stereotipically Beatles" because they went so wide and diverse in what they did that they didn't really have a defined stereotype or style. You could no longer take common features of their style because their style went to be an amoeba. Ringo sang one song per album, except in the White Album were he sang two (because it was a double album) and in "Let it be", were he didn't sing any. Yes, his voice definitely has something funny on it. As for the others, no, Lennon doesn't sing on most of them, at least not lead voice. The rule with the Beatles was that whoever wrote the song sang it, and there were very few exceptions ("In my life" being one, as it was sung by Lennon but apparently written mostly by McCartney), so Lennon sings like 40% of the songs of this album. You are welcome about the video. And yeah, for dissecting music, there's no other band like the Beatles. They were fantastic in so many aspects that it's hard to realize with a normal listen. Correct on the Beatles up to that point. I know about who wrote sings it. But on this album it seems to me as if Lennon is singing all songs because I'm so taken with his voice and his songs stand out.
I'm listening to it right now! Ooops, gotta go and flip back to the first side!
Thanks, Helmut83!

Hey to respond to you and Helmut, 88, I read Barry Miles book "Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now" where he goes through and describes each Beatles song. He was very clear on the hidden meanings and innuendos of the lyrics. I guess we've been around the track on this discussion before, my personal life is I believe in having the heart and mind of Christ, and I happen to be repelled by lyrics that see other people as objects of their selfish pleasure. If the lyrics want to say "I think someone is physically beautiful" in some way, that's fine; but singing about a woman saying "you can do something in between, baby you can drive my car", is crass, crude, and mean. If you disagree, just think if you would like your daughter to be like the one woman in the song who talks like that, and really think about it. Jim

jrmugz: If you are OK with it, I will post it Saturday night (hour from Argentina & the US). The reason is Sunday arrives 5 or 6 hours before in Europe than in our longitudes, and Sunday is usually the day of the week you have more time to do this sort of things, so it would be convenient if people from remote places like Moldova, Liechtenstein or Wales already have the CD at their disposal since their Sunday morning.

Hey, Jim, with all due respect, maybe you should just try relaxing a bit about the lyrics because I get the notion that they are disturbing you a bit from fully enjoying music. Lyrics are that, just lyrics. No one is killing anyone, no one is being disrespectful to any god there may exist, and sex, lust and desire are strong components of daily life and thus inspirational for many artists, and I don't see why they should be considered a bad thing in itself. Don't get me wrong, I'm not intending to mess up with your beliefs or tell you what to do. It's only that I'm get the feeling that if you could get rid of all that unnecesary stricness you would be able to enjoy music better without letting lyrics get you uncomfortable.... OK Helmut, I have some questions for you. 1) If the singing is part of the music, and lyrics are what are being sung, then why should I exclude their content from the overall musical experience? 2) Who made you the authority to say if some lyrics are not being disrespectful to a god that exists? Do you have a knowledge of who the gods are or something? 3) You said nobody is killing anyone, any concern about using setting a house on fire and saying like OJ Simpson "I'd rather see you dead than to catch you with another man", for entertainment? ( I mean, no, obviously I don't REALLY think they were violent or being serious, just saying that it seems like it might be bordering on possibly, veering a little bit too close to the edge of the cliff for comfort, in the name of humor and entertainment, it's been known to happen, blah blah blah. ) I think sex is a wonderful thing, and certainly is a part of everyone's life even if they are not sexually active. Thinking like a pervert and glorifying sin (self-serving sex outside of marriage between a male and a female) never was OK, never will be OK, and should not be glorified in music. And when artists do glorify it, they are behaving like jackasses, in my opinion. Maybe I can completely enjoy the music by saying wow this would be a perfect song if only. I didn't let the lyrics of the first two songs ruin my enjoyment of the rhythms and arrangements, etc., or my appreciation of the album as a whole. At the same time, if I have the kids in the van, I might just skip to "You Won't See Me" and let the CD ride from there. I like The Beatles and a lot of rock-pop music, but I don't put rock bands on the god-like status that others do where they have to worship every song and introduce them to their kids. My kids know a lot of The Cars songs from me playing them, like "Shake it Up", etc.. The other day, a big hit of there's ("Let's Go") came on the radio, and I said to my daughter, hey you know all these Cars songs, this one was actually a very big hit for them, but I don't play it to you guys because I don't like the tone of the lyrics, so I turned down the volume and we just talked. People with no religion worship rock stars and culture and put them on a pedastal to their kids. Not me. I tell them, that if I like a popular artist, that I just take out the meat and throw out all the bones. Heck, I love a lot of The Knack's deep album cuts but I hate their two famous hits "My Sharona" and "Good Girls Don't" because of the lyrics. I don't even play those, they make me sick. OK, I admit great guitar solo in My Sharona, but still not a song for the kids, and the rest of the song is atrocious. Jim

Jim, first of all, what a pity you took it that way. Like I said, I didn't want to mess with your beliefs, just make a suggestion that possibly could have helped you to enjoy music better. Now I know it doesn't, but it's OK. Now I'm going to answer to your questions: 1) If the singing is part of the music, and lyrics are what are being sung, then why should I exclude their content from the overall musical experience? I didn't suggest you to exclude them but to try to put them into context. If a politician says "let's go kill some women", I would consider it extremely serious. If a rock n' roll artist says "I had to kill her" or "I shot my baby", I consider it that it's just that he had to fill the melody with some lyrics, and not serious at all as long as he doesn't give signs of wanting to do so. 2) Who made you the authority to say if some lyrics are not being disrespectful to a god that exists? Do you have a knowledge of who the gods are or something? No one made me the authority and I haven't got the faintest idea of which gods exist and which ones not. I just tend to believe that if one or several gods exist, they surely give a damn about lust being present on the lyrics of a song. By the way, I respect the fact that you choose to believe in one determined god, but does that make you know what offends him and what not? I don't think so, in the same way I cannot know either. And given that I don't think we can know that, I preferr to just lay back and enjoy the music. I was just suggesting you to try do the same, but apparently it doesn't work or you, which I respect. 3) You said nobody is killing anyone, any concern about using setting a house on fire and saying like OJ Simpson "I'd rather see you dead than to catch you with another man", for entertainment? No, no concerns for me. Not at all. Did John Lennon ever set someone's house on fire? No. Did someone do it feeling induced by "Norwegian Wood" lyrics? No. What's the concern then? Thinking like a pervert and glorifying sin (self-serving sex outside of marriage between a male and a female) never was OK, never will be OK, and should not be glorified in music. If thinking like a pervert is a sin, then we will all burn in hell. It's inevitable because it's driven by nature. I don't feel bad about it as long as I don't do bad to others. Why would that would be a sin if I'm not causing harm to anyone? Also, why would sex between two males or between to females would be bad at all? As for glorifying bad actions, I agree that in some contexts that's a very bad thing to do.

Gotta love moralizing on message boards. Dude, that's baby talk man. We're adults now, we can discuss God and morality. Give me a break, man. Do we want to go our whole lives without digging a little deeper? How boring. Like Socrates said, the unexamined life is not worth living. Jim

As for glorifying bad actions, I agree that in some contexts that's a very bad thing to do. Hi Helmut, for #2, I believe in Jesus Christ and He said that to look at a woman lustfully is a sin. Feeling the natural urge is not a sin, but dwelling on it is, because it's selfish, because it's thinking of how a person can please you, instead of just thinking of them as a person made in the image of God. Yeah, we've all sinned, that's why Christ paid the price for us on the cross. We need to accept His grace and forgiveness, and turn away from sins. My understanding of how to do it is to take an RCIA class and join The Catholic Church and to live a holy and sacramental life. BTW, my faith isn't blind, it is reason that has brought me to the faith I have. As for the other question, since we all got here through male and female relationships, I think that sheds a tad of light on one of the main purposes of sex, much moreso than what one thinks will give them the best orgasm, as if that's the main purpose anyways. If orientation was the case, every husband should go after whatever Hollywood actress or personal secretary that they find more attractive than their wife, since that's what they are "oriented" towards. Jim
