This morning Gustavo Cerati passed away due to respiratory arrest at the age of 55. Given that the English speaking world doesn't know much about rock in Spanish and that most members here are English speakers, I will make a short introduction. He was the main singer, guitarist, main songwriter, producer and leader of Soda Stereo, an Argentine rock band which appeared in the '80s and enjoyed huge success (and when I say huge, I say maybe the biggest any latin-American artist has ever seen) throughout that decade and the following, not only in Argentina but in all Latin America, Spain, Brazil and a few non-Iberoamerican countries. They split apart in the late '90s and Cerati went on a successful career of his own.
To give you an idea of how big Soda Stereo was, Wikipedia in English says that Soda Stereo "is considered by critics to be the most important and influential Ibero-American band of all time and a Latin music legend".
Well, Cerati was also a big admirer of Jeff Lynne and ELO and a couple of times he has cited Lynne as an influence. At some points in his career his look went quite similar to Jeff's, and this one time he presented himself as Jeff Lynne (although he pronnounces it "line", common mistake in Latin America) and the band as Electric Light Orchestra:
Also, the introduction of his song "Rio Babel" was a tribute to ELO's "Momma":
Last, one of Soda Stereo's hits live during a reunion in 2007, with Gustavo up front singing. For those who have never heard of the band, it's worth watching:
