What a horrible woman! I take it that you might not like another person, but once you are on a trip with that person make your best effort to keep things calm and enjoyable. She didn't need to be your friend, only behave like an adult. Sounds like she made a point of making you feel uncomfortable.

I agree completely with Helmut83, your sister in law sounds like a nightmare. But also your brother must have known how she felt and still let you come, despite knowing how it was likely to be. It wouldn't be so bad if it was somewhere down the road but Italy is halfway around the world for you. I hope you have the chance to visit again with tk6 and have the proper experience

Thank you, both. Anywho - they don't live in town, so I've not had to see, or say a word to her, for over 8 years. HA!

You're right, most of the winged lions did look quite calm, except that one on the Rialto banner - can you translate the slogan? You know, that banner surprised me a lot because it's not written in Italian but in Spanish. Although there isn't a 100% exact translation to English (because the verb in Spanish is impersonal), the closest would be "do not touch Rialto". As far as I know, in Italian it would be "Rialto non si tocca" o "non toccare Rialto". Maybe Buttler can complete (or correct) what I say. Helmut83"Rialto non si tocca". That's correct my friend! Your italian is perfect www.theguardian.com/world/2011/mar/13/venice-rialto-market-tourism

Thanks for the link Buttler , very interesting reading. Especially about the Fontego dei Tedeschi palazzo, this was the shopping centre by the Rialto with the fabulous views from the roof terrace. I followed a link to that and would guess that Benetton being forced to keep it a public space is the reason why they have men on the entrance doors, trying to put people off going in so they can keep it as exclusive as they can

Long and short of why my trip to Venice, and surrounding countries, was not a good time? My sister-in-law was a bitch. My brother neglected to tell me that she didn't want me with them. My sister was to go too, but at last minute couldn't, so I went. Tickets bought, hotels paid - what to do? Well, I was the third wheel and made to feel it. She didn't want me and my sister to go in the first place. I tried to stay out of their way. My brother did the best he could. Oh that's awful BSJ . I beg your pardon for saying it about a member of your family but your sister in law seems very childish. It puts me partly in mind of a holiday my mum went on when she was younger with a friend who wasn't her friend. They went to Spain, a whole group was supposed to be going but in the end only the two of them went. The friend-who-wasn't-a-friend spent the entire holiday drinking all night and sleeping all day. They only had one key to the room so mum had to sit in her room all day long. The two of them have never spoken since and my mum is very glad.

Thank you, queenofthehours. Your mom's trip and the horrible time she had is a hard thing to forget. You really don't. I still think to this day if there was something I could have done different. I hope your mom was able to go back to Spain and have the great time she deserved.

Oh no queenofthehours, your poor Mum! I think there's a certain kind of woman who behaves badly like this on holiday, I've heard some similar tales where they've really ruined peoples' experience with their selfishness. I'm with BSJ, I hope your Mum has been able to enjoy Spain properly since.

Thanks BSJ , unomusette . Luckily mum had already been to Spain before with family and later went again with family to Frankfurt, to the beer festival. The hotdogs and cuckoo clocks provide better memories than horrible people!

Wow, majestic! Many people say Prague is the most beautiful city in the world. That church! And the clock. My sister went there and told us about it but I forgot, what was supposed to be it's particular feature?

It's the worlds third oldest astronomical clock (whatever one of those is) en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prague_astronomical_clock

Lovely pics once again Horacewimp, looks like you had lovely cloudless skies but judging by how well wrapped up people are I'm guessing it was around this time of year? The pink and yellow buildings in the last photo remind me irresistibly of neapolitan ice cream
