In the 70s this was one of the skip-able tunes on OOTB for me. But I just heard OOTB again for the first time in DECADES. And this song......blew......me......away. It's fantastic!! It rocks and thrills and motors and chills. Stilted vocals, brass, soaring harmonies......it has it all!!!
(Perhaps I should make another thread on how OOTB is sequenced so damn wrong.....)??

Yep, me too. I still have a problem with 'ATB', it's a least favourite on OOTB. I've yet to re-appreciate it but I'm hoping it'll be soon . I know it sounds great but compared to the others it's less memorable.

Great song, even if it does "borrow" heavily from Brian Wilson's "Heroes and Villains".

Not one of my favourites (I like the chorus), but Jeff must like it, because he used the verse melody again on The Way Life's Meant To Be.

This has always been my favorite song on the planet!! It ROCKS!! There is so much going on, the plucked strings, the acoustic guitar, the electric guitar, the drums, the harmony and the trumpets. Trumpets? you may ask. Yes, trumpets! This song is an absolute masterpiece!!

Don't forget the whooshy ending and the slight Elvis impersonation (did I read that it was written/recorded around the time that Elvis passed away?) Great song

unomusette,
Where is the impersonation of Elvis? Not being a fan of Elvis, please don't hurt me, I've never noticed it.

Here comes Mr. Killjoy again... haha, nah, I'll just give my honest opinion of the song: it does nothing for me. Totally neutral. I wouldn't say it's bad but it conveys no feeling to me. Skippable.

unomusette, Where is the impersonation of Elvis? Not being a fan of Elvis, please don't hurt me, I've never noticed it. There, there, you know I'm only in the business of dealing out pain if a spanking slipper misdemeanour has occurred and this doesn't qualify At least not at the moment.... I would say it's in the staccato way Jeff sings the verses, starts with the second verse and gets stronger as the song goes on, probably most noticeable in the last bit where Jeff sings "When the wind is blowing softly through the streets of a little town and the music's playing - you're waiting somewhere over the horizon" It's not a full blown Elvis but I do reckon it's a bit of a tribute. I'm sure I read an interview or something with Jeff where he said they had the news of Elvis's death at around the time they were recording it.

Always liked this song and the Mexican trumpet break is inspired, as well as the great Night in the City, (Starlight and It's Over are also overlooked gems on OOTB, too IMO). They're also all great tracks to air-drum to, (take my word for it!)
