Inspired by a comment from unomusette on another thread I wondered if anyone has any claims to fame. Have you ever met anyone famous and how did you act when you did. If you haven't met anyone who would you like to meet.

I waited outside The Odeon in Birmingham one Sunday to get the autographs of Ultravox, I managed to get them all have three albums/singles signed by all members. Also spotted Hazel O'Connor as she was dating Midge Ure at the time. While we were waiting for Ultravox who came walking along New Street in Birmingham but Phil Oakey and the two girls Susan and Joanne from The Human League, they had been filming at the TV studios, so I got their autographs as well

You will probably laugh at this, but I once met Hanson's middle brother at a music store. He asked me if I knew English and when I told him I did he asked me for help so I had to act as a translator to ask for some part of an instrument he was searching for (the owner of the store didn't know Enlgish). I was there for like 10 minutes until they finally got him what he wanted. He was very polite and thanked me a lot for the help. Funny thing is that I actually knew whom he was and I don't think anyone around did, and I liked 3 or 4 of their songs.

Ooo, I never knew Hazel O'Connor and Midge Ure were ever an item, I shall file this away. I'm always torn about meeting famous people I admire, always want to but I go tomato-red when anyone I don't know well shows me any attention. And you really need to have a devastating question for them, anything other than "when are you going to play *insert home town*?" or "I love you, I have all your records" I've met Bev when I won the silver disc from the old fan club, he was sweet but we didn't see much of him. Luckily it wasn't just him and me as there were two other compo winners so I didn't have to come up with anything interesting. Sort of met ELO 2 members at the signing line when they played 2 nights at Butlins Minehead Got a photo sitting on Eric Troyer's lap...but I look dreadful in it so don't even try getting me to post it. They were all really friendly especially Kelly. Met Motorhead a couple of times, Fast Eddie tried to get me to go backstage but I was barely legal, my bf was right behind me and I really didn't know what nasty disease I might catch hehe. Second time on the Iron Fist tour I asked Lemmy where the old Bomber prop had gone and he wasn't much impressed. Met Alice Cooper at a record shop signing, what a cutie, he's absolutely TINY. Signed a pic of our daughter who's named after him and said he was her Uncle Alice. Sniffle. Hobnobbed with Saxon members outside a gig in Cardiff in about 1979, lovely guys, just like talking to other fans so no pressure there. Shook hands after a gig with Dave Cousins out of Strawbs, he looked me up and down like a piece of horseflesh but that goes with the territory with him I think. Cornered Tom Kirk who's Muse's old school friend/media manager/secret member, he's pretty easy to catch if you lurk around the mixing desk.I think I squeezed him a bit hard - I was SO excited! Everyone else I know has met the band, I've decided to rise above it and pretend not to care. And it's a bit weird being almost old enough to be their mother. Most recently Mr Musette and I spent the evening with Arthur Brown ("I am the God of Hellfire! And I bring you...FIRE") at his arty studio in Lewes. It was a kind of fundraiser so he could make a new album, there were only about 10 of us. We had a banquet and a special performance, he's absolutely adorable and has a billion interesting tales to tell. Met him a few weeks later after a gig in Birmingham and was so pleased when he remembered us. Great thread, I've had a warm fuzzy feeling just remembering all this and I might remember more

Not really, the closest I've come to meeting someone famous is getting autographs from former pro basketball players Artis Gilmore, Adrian Dantley and Curly Neal during a USO tour stop.
I'm probably not the sort of person that would approach famous people if they were just going about their day and minding their own business somewhere, no matter how much I admired them.
Anyway, were you shaking violently after your encounter, Helmut?

I saw Bob Seger holding his toddler son while waiting for someone in the x-ray dept. at a hospital I worked at. All the co-workers were saying "There is Bob Seger", but we didn't want to bother him, I think one of my co-workers asked him for and received an autograph. Seemed like a really nice guy, was very playful with his child. Jim PS BTW, we do know that Weird Al is making fun of us for this thread?

Anyway, were you shaking violently after your encounter, Helmut? Yes I was. I even let go a high-pitched scream as soon as the guy went away and the owner of the shop had to calm me down and prevent me from removing my t-shirt. Then I managed to control myself and went away by my own means. I'm not one to approach famous people either, but it happened that the guy approached me. A close friend of mine has a story that's way better. He must have been like 24 at the moment and him and 3 more friends had a Maná tribute band and were all huge fans of the Mexican band. By the time the story happened the tribute band had been around like for 5 years. Well, one day him and one of his fellow bandmates were in a music store in Buenos Aires when all of a sudden, two members of Maná entered. My friend and his mate approached them, introduced theirselves and told them they had a Maná tribute band. One of the guys from Maná asked them for their emails and phones and said he was going to take a look at the material they had uploaded to internet. Then they said goodbye and went away. At this point the guys were hyper excited to have met their most admired artists, but of course thought that was all. That same night, one of the guys from Maná called my friend. He said that he had loved the covers of the tribute band and asked them what they (the guys from the tribute band) were doing that night. They told him that nothing (which was a lie, they had to cancel a few programs with other people, included one in which I was involved) and invited the guys from Maná to my friend's house. A few hours later Maná and the guys from the tribute band were jamming (playing music) all together at my friend's house, along with some guys from the Mexican's staff, and stayed until late. My friend then told me that they had a blast and that all of the time they were like "is this really happening?".

I met Ben Folds. Good guy! Very funny and outgoing. I asked him what advice he'd give to someone who wanted to pursue piano as a musical career, and he replied "break your fingers." LOL.

Wow the Mana one is definitely the best so far, how much better can it get than jamming with your idols and having them say they like what YOU've created?
Although of course I can sympathise with the heady excitement of the Hanson encounter, the middle brother is definitely the best one. *doesn't admit she thought there were only two of them*

Just imagine how would you feel if Jeff Lynne, Bev Bevan, Richard Tandy and the others were jamming with you at your place... it must have felt surreal. Although of course I can sympathise with the heady excitement of the Hanson encounter, the middle brother is definitely the best one. *doesn't admit she thought there were only two of them* Haha, it's not exactly like the Gibb brothers but still, it's someone famous (or who had his while of fame at some point).

I well remember them, "Middle of Nowhere" is one of the best albums of the 90s Yeah, it is a good album. "Man from Milwaukee" (that heavy guitar riff...) and "Madeline" (that tapping bassline...) are some great songs from that album. I think they were a bit underrated (or not taken seriously enough) because of the fact that they were a bunch of kids -and on top of that looked a bit like girls-, but the difference with all of the other shitty boy bands is that they actually wrote their songs and played their instruments. I remember the little one being like 8 and fantastic on the drums.
