With the resurgence of Jeff's ELO, what are people's thoughts on the tribute bands springing up and which are worth listening to? I believe the best is the ELO experience. Heard them many times and they get better each time

I've seen The ELO Experience a few times and would highly recommend them.
Even after Jeff's tour, I still think there is room for these tribute bands, especially in the smaller venues, Butlins and Chicken in a Basket type establishments.

It's weird, I thought the ELO Experience were pretty average. The show I saw, it seemed like "Jeff's" guitar wasn't even plugged. It didn't seem to be making any noise. They had a second (or first???) guitarist. They had some string players but it still seemed like the keyboardist was playing some of the key orchestral parts. I dunno, it just didn't work for me.

Having looked online, there now seem to be a multitude of ELO tribute bands: ELO experience, ELO again, Explosive Light Orchestra, ELO encounter with the last 3 all billing themselves as the world's greatest ELO tribute. Would forum members go to hear a tribute band and if you have, are any of them really able to call themselves the world's greatest?

I can only speak for 'The ELO Experience', a good 2 hours of ELO hits and album tracks.

I've been to see tributes to other bands and enjoyed them, but I don't fancy going to see tributes to my favourites for some reason. Although you could say Part II were a kind of ELO tribute, I've seen them I have heard good reports of the Wilbury tribute though, from people on this very forum, so I might be tempted there if they turned up locally.

I'm the opposite I think! If I could see all the ELO tribute bands then I would. I had the chance to see part II but turned it down.

I work as a theatre steward and have seen both ELO Experience and ELO Again:
ELO Experience had a slightly more polished show with a small string section -- setlist was the majority of The Very Best of ELO with Concerto For A Rainy Day & 10538 Overture thrown in. Decent performance - They sold little lightsticks (and pushed them pre interval)at halftime so in the 2nd half the crowd had lots of light sticks to wave in time with the music which was a nice visual.
ELO Again -- At first I was less impressed by them, preferring ELO Experience, but after a couple of tunes they found their swagger and delivered a cracking show. Setlist had the better choices for me because there were some interesting additions such as Last Train to London, Twilight, Rockaria and more. There was more energy on stage and a nice amount of danger in that you didn't quite know what was going to happen next. ELO Again made a little more effort to look like classic ELO with wigs and costumes... but almost in a tongue in cheek way. They seemed to have more fun on stage.

I want to see the ELO Experience but they have eluded me so far. I always seem to miss them when they tour near me but that's thankfully every year so they must enjoy being on the road more than the original Jeff!
Last year I couldn't afford to see them AND the real Jeff so close together - It felt so good walking past the ELO Experience ad in my local theatre and being the only one who was going to see the real person! Most tributes are for bands that don't exist anymore.
The Traveling Wilburys tribute I highly recommend. I saw them last winter and the night was fabulous. They don't take themselves seriously but just serious enough so that you believe in their love of the music. Imagine this forum forming a tribute act and that's the kind of style they had smiley-cool15 .

I nearly went to see ELO Again last year, but as the ELO Experience were the first ELO tribute I saw (if you exclude ELO Part 2 that is!!), I've got some (misguided?) loyalty to them! I've booked tickets to see them on the 16th June. I haven't seen them in a few years now, so am looking forward to it especially as the last time I saw them, they played Latitude 88 North. Great Song and just fantastic to hear it live. Every time I have seen them, they have got a little bit better both in terms of the song sound and their stage performance, as the first time I saw them there were no strings, then just cellos on stage, and then violin and cello's! I do however think the 'electric' guitar player they had before the current chap was way better. Then the next Sat (24th), I'm seeing the real deal at Wembley, so will enjoy comparing and contrasting but I think I know which night I will prefer the most!!

I think the best thing about tribute groups is the fantasy element. Copying a famous group as an objective is rather tiresome but once you start playing the songs the group you are copying don't play and give the audience something different then you can rival even the real band for entertainment.
A false ELO might not have the real Jeff but even the real Jeff won't always play the songs you want to hear. And what makes up for the lack of Jeff-ness is the addition of seeing a band onstage who love the real band as much as you do.

I just came across this video of a live performance of "The Diary of Horace Wimp" by The ELO Encounter from March 2018. Cute!
