I agree with BSJ, I like your writing style as well, queenofthehours. Very "story", and entertainingly pacey. Glad that you were able to attend such a great concert. That live version of "A winter shade of pale" gave me the chills, and I reckon it must have been even better in person, and probably the rest of the set was as good. And good thing that "the incident" with Gary Brooker wasn't even close to ruining the night; if anything, it made it more epic, and you will have been there on a night every Procol Harum fan will remember.

Eloise, I'm a bit the same way, and I'm going a bit through the same situation... only that not with Jeff. I went to an extraordinary Roxette concert in 2011 (and I remember the following day, on the Rolling Stone article about it, many people who had attended were commenting they were still in shock at how surprisingly amazing it had been, so I was far from the only one). After that, my live-gig senses became a bit numb and everything that followed seemed a bit irrelevant, with the honorable exception of Jeff Lynne's concert last year which was the only thing that really moved me after 2011.

I went to see the Beach Boys this past January. I've always liked them and thought it would be fun. But, there was one thing I had not realized....after seeing our Lord Damey last year in New York City, I have been ruined for all other bands. While I had a good time at the BB concert, I confess to yawning a couple of times and looking at my watch, wondering how late we'd get out. It was fun but not half the fun of seeing Jeff. Is anybody like me? So ridiculously spoiled that you are not much of a fan for anybody else? It's kind of sad because there are other bands that I like but I don't think I'll have near as much fun at their concerts. I am a one band woman who will occasionally dabble with other music but not often. Is anybody else so devoted to Jeff? Please tell me I'm not the only one. Yep. Me Too! Seeing Jeff last year spoiled me forever.
I walked out of the Echo arena ready to cry. I thought life was over and I had seen all I wanted to see in life.
I felt like Uncle Matthew: "I have only ever read one book in my life, and that is 'White Fang'. It's so frightfully good I’ve never bothered to read another" (The Pursuit of Love, by Nancy Mitford)
When you've been lucky enough to see the ultimate musical hero of your life where else is there to go but down? Any other gig after that would just be a waste of money. spent a long time thinking about who else I'd love to see that would make me as excited as Jeff and only came up with George Harrison but sadly that won't happen . Dylan is stick knocking about but I hear his shows are patchy in quality these days. Probably Tom Petty would get me excited but although I adore him I don't know his work back to front as I do Jeff's!
Procol Harum is the only band I love that gets me almost as excited as seeing ELO, the only band I'm an expert on other than ELO. But the reason the thought of seeing them didn't cheer me after the ELO concert was because I didn't know if I'd ever get to see them again. Same as I didn't know I'd be seeing Jeff again. PH are not the most prolific at gigging in Britain, same as Jeffy.
I think the main reason for feeling pretty low after seeing ELO (or any amazing gig for that matter) is because you are never sure if you are going to experience the same joy again. Uncertainty is a terrible thing.

queenofthehours . I truly love your writing. This was a great read. You let us in with the sharing of your passion. The 'teaser' of an impending disaster threw wild thoughts into my head! Obviously you are fine, so I let that worry go. Thanks for all the extras. Have played the video many times. They did play 'Conquistador'? Thank you! But I was really worried I'd written too much. Once I start I cannot stop! Yes, they certainly did play 'Conquistador'. At the Dominion it was (suitably) the encore but at the RFH it was played in the second half three songs from the end. It got a great reception and was extremely loud and rocking. Gary's vocals despite the accident were top drawer and Geoff Whitehorn on guitar was doing his own thing like a wild thing.
From what I read, nothing apart from injuring his mouth would have stopped Gary from going back on stage. If you can't sing there is no show but I'm sure the band would have found a way around that too somehow!

Thanks! But I didn't try to do any style at all other than "rambling" .
I love the orchestral version of 'AWSOP' even though it's relatively new and only dates back a few years. It's my favourite version, that opening is just so beautiful. Pop fact - the 'AWSOP' producer was Denny Cordell who also produced hits for the Move.
I had hoped there would be something special to remember the concert by, something as special as, say, Roy turning up at an ELO concert. But I never thought serious injury would play a part!

Ahh, sorry I'm late to this, not sure how I managed to miss your posts *has stern word with self*
You paint the picture of the gig so well, and what a great seat you had. I don't think there are any other performers of any age who would come back onstage after that fall, the Commander is a proper legend. And I learned something too, I didn't realise Robin Trower began with PH. It's always a proper treat to have one of your favourite songs played unexpectedly, lucky you and good on the band for being creative with the setlist.
Are you planning to stock up on merch via mail order?

queenofthehours,
How cute that you call JL "Jeffy". Thank you for explaining so well why I will probably never enjoy myself at a concert ever again. I am not sad now that it's over. I floated out of Radio City Music Hall and I have been on a cloud of joy ever since, pretty much. I am still beyond amazed that I finally got to see my beloved Jeff and dear Richard. That was a moment in paradise that thought would never happen. I hope that you can realize how blessed you were to see them and rejoice instead of feeling sad. It truly would be sad had you missed that opportunity.

The Commander I hear is healing well and is currently on holiday before the Procol Harum tour in May! Yup Robin went to school with Gary which is where they formed their first band but Robin left Procol in 1971 before returning in the early 90s.
There's not much merch on offer at all apart from the tshirt but hopefully, on the tour...

So I went to see Tom Chaplin on 23rd, the day after the awful events in Manchester but it didn't deter me and my dad from going to a concert the day after something like that. Although I must admit I was a little scared about going! But I really enjoyed myself, Tom sang all of his solo album honestly his voice is amazing, it's just like listening to the album! He also played a couple of bonus tracks which of course I knew. He played a few Keane songs which is to be expected. My dad even filmed me and him singing along to Everybody's Changing, I sound awful on it(I can sing honest!), I will try and get the footage off his phone and show it to you. I'm also going to see OMD (Orchestral Manouvres in the Dark) with my dad in November at Symphony Hall since well I do like them but I didn't want my dad going on his own

I saw in the newspaper that OMD were touring and thought "hmm, I wonder if Horacewimp will be going?" . I don't know whether to book for their Sheffield date but I'm not sure I'll have the money left after seeing Jeff at Wembley.
