going to see Family of the Year tomorrow night (and almost forgot - Typhoon is opening) not sure either band is known across the pond, but it should be a nice evening on the Baltimore harborside

I went to see Earth, Wind and Fire last night in Greensboro. It was at an outdoor venue and it was a beautiful evening with temps in the low 80s. Perfect!! We had lawn tickets, but still had a great view. Most of the 7000 or so fans in attendance were middle-aged, but there were some younger and older people, too. We arrived late because of a flight delay that evening, but it was still such a lovely event! Most of EWF's music is so uplifting, positive, and fun, without being lightweight. Philip Bailey talked during the concert about how they made a deliberate choice throughout the years to send a positive message with their music and lyrics. The set was pretty straightforward, but allowed for the horn section to be elevated above the rest of the band. They projected lots of photos of the band from the early years and did some great dance moves, too! They were resplendent in their glittery outfits!! unomusette would be impressed! Philip Bailey--Ah!! What a voice (four octave range!), and at 67, he can still hit those high notes! Such a joy! For much of the concert, he sang his original (higher) parts in the songs, as well as those of the great Maurice White (RIP). Three of the original members from the early 70s are still with the band. They performed all of the big hits, of course, including some of my favorites: "Sing a Song," which they were playing as we arrived, "Shining Star," and "Fantasy"--love PB's vocals at the end of that one! Their last song before the encore was "September," preceded by "Boogie Wonderland." The encore was "In the Stone," which is not as well known by most people as some of their other songs. I'm not sure if that's become their signature finale song. We were all wondering what could top "September." I am constantly reminded of how indebted I am to my older brother, who introduced me to some of my favorite music, including ELO, Hall and Oates, and EWF when I was growing up. Thanks, big bro! Two happy songs for your weekend enjoyment!

Thanks, eloneen. Happy you made the concert. Must have been nerve wracking. "Do you remember..." when they were a staple on the radio? I miss them. Time to get their greatest hits.

Sounds amazing eloneen, Earth Wind and Fire are a band I've always admired for their sheer devotion to making as big a spectacle of themselves as they can. But the music is top notch too, that's the killer part. Can't believe Philip Bailey is 67, what a fantastic voice he has. It's good that they're carrying on despite losing Maurice White, I'm sure he'd be chuffed to see them still putting on such brilliant shows

if you get a chance to see Lake Street Dive, don't miss out they are one of those bands that is even better live a very talented band, powerful lead singer, and songs with heart and meaning they really rocked the harbor last night in Baltimore
their drummer's take on the band's sound "We want it to sound like the Beatles and Motown had a party together"

In early August we'll be going to another outdoor concert, like last year, at the North Carolina Museum of Art. They do a great job of bringing in (non-English language) international groups to our area. Paris Combo is a French group that Hubby and I both like. They've been around for about 20 years. One of my students actually introduced me to their music about 15 years ago. They have a fun style that combines a variety of different musical and cultural influences. Lots of their songs are very dance-able. Here's a video of one of their songs (with subtitles). Going to see Paris Combo with my hubby tonight! They are a fun, jazzy French band. It's an outdoor concert at NCMA; I hope it doesn't rain. There's rain in our forecast for a few more days and we haven't had today's dose/dousing yet.

elophile They are fun, and extremely talented! The show was great, and it didn't rain at all! I knew some of the songs, and the lead singer (stage name Belle du Berry) was quite charming with her banter in French and English with the audience and the rest of the band. We were able to move up front to second row seats, right in front of the dancing area just below the stage. There were lots of middle-aged and senior couples (and a few younger ones, too) out there tearing up the dance floor with some pretty impressive dance moves. Hubby and I even got up and danced (!) for the song in the video I posted, which was their last song before the encore. (We're more the singing, swaying, clapping, boogie-in-your-seats type of concert-goers.) My inadequate dancing skills are legendary, and my husband would put himself in the same category, but we were both enthusiastic and dignified out there, something that is hard to do with our dancing skill set. We felt emboldened to dance once we witnessed a 20-something young man flailing about on his own, enjoying the music with no sense of rhythm or of his own body moving in space...and I'm being generous here. He eventually found a dance partner. He walked over and invited a 70-something woman who was standing alone off to the side to dance with him. Despite her attempts to tame him, he flung and spun her about, and she eventually just gave in and decided to follow his lead. It was a sight to see! At one point she tried to take leave of him, and he put his arms around her, smiled, and gave her the sweetest little kiss on the tip of her nose. She was clearly charmed by her new young friend. She came back and "danced" with him again for a while. We tried not to stare, but the spectacle was too compelling. It looked like they were both having fun. Got to give the guy props for courage, enthusiasm, and his own unique brand of charm, if not for dancing! I think he made her day! Anyway, the band was fantastic, we danced, I sang along a little, and a good time was had by all!

Too bad we missed them!

going to see Fantastic Negrito tonight if the thunderstorms stay away - will be close to 100F in the city this afternoon in his recent music he seems to be channeling Jimmy Hendrix - hard rock guitar, anti-war lyrics, some distortion for instance ...

Thanks! I like! Have fun at the concert! I detected a bit of a Prince sound, and when I looked up Fantastic Negrito, I discovered that he was indeed inspired by Prince. He had a gig in this area right around the time I was leaving for Martinique. Alas, we don't really follow current music at all, so we miss out on a lot of interesting artists!

the band just before Fantastic Negrito was Wild Child - which I didn't know anything about. Turned out to be a 7 piece band that played by my count 11 different instruments, including a cello and violin! They were a nice surprise. Then the thunderstorm arrived and Fantastic Negrito got delayed. But the lightning stayed just to the East and the show started about 20 minutes later than planned. Wow! The guy has amazing energy and had the crowd dancing and singing along non-stop from start to finish. I highly recommend seeing them if they come to your area.
I already put up an example of Negrito's music. Here's a sample of Wild Child.
