Nothing wrong with BOP at all, it was my 1st ELO cd and I played it to death back in 86....

At the back of my head I always seem to think of BOP as a somewhat "lesser" album yet I can think of at least three of my favourite ever ELO songs that come from that record.

BOP does certainly seem to divide opinion. At the time of its release i’d already accepted that ELO were no more so it was all upside anyway. But I played it to death and like you, some of my favourite tracks are on it. I can remember one review of BOP, saying “ELO are back with a brand new 1986 sheen” or words to that effect. FWIW I much prefer BOP to AITU.

Skipping tracks, pausing, fast forward and reverse, playing tracks in any order,it was like a new toy to me.

Well, I hadn't listened to ELO 2 for a while, and admittedly I forgot that Roll Over Beethoven was not, in fact, the last song on the album just because it's always the last song played at concerts...

I was so disappointed by BOP when it came out but I've grown to love it

I find it interesting, all the differing opinions on BOP. For me, I instinctively label it as one of the albums I really like, even though if I were to sit down and make some tough decisions to rank my favorite ELO albums, I know there would definitely be several albums above it.
I know it broke away from ELO's classic sound at the time, and that a lot of people think it's a weak album because Jeff's heart wasn't in it (hence the nickname 'Fulfilment of Contract'), but I remember reading an article from around the time of its release where Jeff said he was rather pleased with some of the tracks on it. Who knows, it could've just been for the press, but I do love several of the songs, and I'm happy that others have been able to warm up to the album as time has gone on.

I think it's time Jeff started including Calling America in his shows. After all, it was their last Top 40 hit single. Why not So Serious? Joker was here.

Okay I’ll admit it, I hadn’t really listened to any Idle Race songs before this week pretty much... ...now as you can guess, I’m obsessed!

Well, I think this thread is very very important to know each other's feelings!! So nice idea. Personally, I have lot of confessions, but I think I can put only a few right here, for example...
- I don't have any interest to hear the first three ELO albums yet. It's the beginning of everything, but I don't know why I can't heard them completely!!
- I re-started my interest for the band in 2015, after the release of When The Night Comes. I fell in love with the song, so I started to search everything about the band, and of course, I started to buy the discography, until today
- I never listened to the albums until I buy the CDs. The only exception was ElDorado.
- I don't understand why the past of the band -or the past members- are...you know...forgotten? by the official sites. I can't believe Kelly, Hugh, Mel, Mik and even Bev -sometimes- aren't named as important parts of the golden years of the band!!!!
- Finally, I don't like the idea of put the Wembley Or Bust audios to celebrate the birthday of some singles. Twilight and Turn To Stone are examples, but we want to hear the originals! The original Twilight has no better version, I'm sure!! Haha

Okay I’ll admit it, I hadn’t really listened to any Idle Race songs before this week pretty much... ...now as you can guess, I’m obsessed! I went through that about 9 months ago. Bought "Back to the Story" double CD that has all of their songs. It's really fun discovering a whole new era of Jeff! But - getting that obsession right before the new album comes out could lead to sensory overload

Thoughts... BOP To me (and probably only thought of, by me) BOP is a concept album. Each song records the steps in a guy realising that his relationship is over. An allegory of Jeff's relationship to ELO music - and fellow band members, perhaps? The Idle Race I first heard some of their stuff on the compilation of Jeff's music - Message From The Country. I wanted to hear more!. Then I spotted Back To The Story. No hesitation - I bought it. The two "Jeff" albums are fantastic. ELO was there, in all but name - as well as Jeff's sense of humour. Some general thoughts. It's well documented - by vlogdance in one of her poetic masterpieces - that my association with the Brummie Band began with Sweet Talking Woman. The strings are "what did it". When I got to hear the earlier stuff, pre-Eldorado, I didn't like it. Too coarse. How wrong could I be?! My opinion is that it's the purest form of the Electric "Light Orchestra". A light orchestra being a smaller, non-symphonic, collection of instruments. In our case, with the plug in the socket.

The first ELO single that I actually bought was Evil Woman but I didn't really like/understand what was going on with the live B-Side: 10538 Overture/Do Ya. I knew nothing of the band's history so I was really confused when I bought my first album of theirs, A New World Record and it contained Do Ya but not Evil Woman! As an unchallenging teenager who obviously wasn't reading the labels or sleeve notes accurately, I thought no more of it and progressed on to buy Out Of The Blue and then, the Three Light Years box set (containing OTTD, Eldorado and FTM). In those days, only the band's Jet Records/United Artists back catalogue releases (in the UK) tended to be advertised so I thought I pretty much owned everything.
Browsing through the record store racks one day, I came across a compilation album called The Light Shines On which claimed to contain tracks from the first two ELO albums, none of which I recognised (yes, I hadn't even heard of Roll Over Beethoven!!). I bought it out of idle curiosity and after playing it once was absolutely convinced that there were two different groups, both called the Electric Light Orchestra! The music was just so different from the polished efforts of albums like ANWR and OOTB. In those pre-internet days, it took me some time to piece it all together, to realise that there was indeed only one ELO and one Jeff Lynne and....that funny little live B-Side, 10538 Overture had started out as a genuine album track and as I soon discovered, their first single.
My determination to own everything that they'd ever released had begun. Only my 50p per week pocket money was getting in the way!

ANWR was my first album (thanks mum and dad) and for a while I didn't know about any others. Even when OOTB came out and I'd heard a few singles it wasn't until a visit to a mates house that I realised it was an ELO albumt was even longer before I discovered the first five albums and in my head OTTD and FTM are bunched together with Eldorado coming next. It does often seem like many different bands buy this and so on and depending on my moods I love listening to them all
