I used to phone the city radio station multiple times in an hour with multiple requests for elo songs, using different voices.

For a very long time I thought the 7 dudes in ELO made ALL those sounds on the record (ie choir, orchestra). When I found out it was way beyond those 7 dudes I was......disappointed.

I would sometimes sing an elo song in my room while arranging 7 chessmen on the bed, making them move about. I was 16.

I knew the birthdays of all 7 dudes. I still do.

One day I turned on the radio halfway through Don't Bring Me Down and I asked my brother, who knew I was the world's biggest elo geek, "who is singing this shit?" When the truth was revealed after the song I wanted the ground to open up before me, so that I could dive in. (I did genuinely like the song on subsequent listens.)

I first got Time on cassette. I played it so many times in the summer of 81 that the sound started to get hissy. I went to the store and bought 2 more copies, alternating them in the player.

I was in charge of a bunch of Army Cadets for a week or so, and every time it was lights out in the barracks I treated them to some music.....ELO 8 tracks stuffed into the cheapest shittiest little portable player, blaring down the echoing hallway, drowning out the groans of the Cadets who didn't appreciate being forced to listen.

Surely @ole deserves some kind of a medal for such unswerving devotion?

Found another old thread to bump I had seen the cover of On the Third Day online countless times, but I never noticed the exposed navels until I was physically holding the LP in my hands. And along the same lines—and during the same trip to the record store, to boot!—I learned that the people on the cover of Olé ELO were ladies, not the members of the band.

I used to not be able to tell Tandy and Mel apart 😶
And not ashamed to admit I do think Balance of Power is a good album and I like to give it a listen (though not as much as ANWR or Eldorado), the only thing that disappointed me about it was that it broke the band’s tradiotional sound/style for the popular music style of the time, though the same could be said for Discovery.

I remember to my eternal shame being very disappointed when 'I'm Alive' was released. On the other hand. I remember reading circa 1984 that "ELO had broken up". So imagine my massive relief when 'Balance of Power' was released. To further confuse the story and add another confession, i was at my girlfriends house and 'Calling America' played on the radio and i didn't realise it was ELO 'til the DJ, (Paul Gambaccini i think), said it at the end. BTW, i still love 'Balance of Power' and my girlfriend... who is now my wife.

BOP is such a cool album, there's absolutely no reason to feel ashamed of liking it. Listening to ELO's albums 1971-1986, Jeff was actually never averse to incorporating popular styles into his basic sound.
