Jeff has hinted in a recent interview that this could be it. 2020 is the 50th anniversary of ELO. How would we all feel if FOON was The End? 8 albums in the 70s, 4 albums in the 80s (if you count Xanadu), nothing in the 90's, an album in the 00's, and 2 albums in the 10's....that's a damn fine run. We can throw in Jeff solo, Jeff in The Move, and The Idle Race for good measure. And The Travelling Wilburys. And other production work. He's done ok!! Discuss. Edit: When I made this post I had misunderstood something that Jeff had said. Clearly, FOON is not the last word. My apologies.

Oh, I really hope it's not... I'd be deeply saddened if it was, having hardly been a part of the ELO fandom for very long, and just as things have been getting exciting again these past few years, too...
That said, if FOON really is The End--from what I've heard of it so far, at least Jeff will be going out on a high note!
But personally, I don't think it will be. Ringo Starr is still touring and putting out albums at 79, so I don't see any reason not to believe that we'll get at least a few more years out of Jeff. And knowing how much Jeff loves the studio, I wouldn't be surprised if death is the only thing that could get between him and writing new songs, even if he doesn't tour much more after this. Whether any future releases would be Jeff Lynne's ELO or solo work, though, I wouldn't know... and when it really comes down to it, I wouldn't care. As stated, ELO's already got a huge discography. And Jeff is a gift to humanity in any of his forms.

Hi did say recently that he wanted to carry on making music until his last day...he can't stop even if he wanted to!

I hope FOON isn't the last album. I'd still like to hear Jeff try some new things and new styles, I think he's got so much potential.
His workload these last few years has been high so I wouldn't mind if he scaled back a bit but as long as he's still making music and is up for the odd tour I'd probably be happy.

If he does another tour then PLEASE mix the set list up or else I won't be going...

I’d be fine either way, to be honest. If he keeps making new music? Wonderful. If he doesn’t? He has every right to that decision, and FOON is quite a good note to go out on 🙂 Only time will tell.

His voice is totally restored through many tours these years(angelic falsetto in''All My Love'') , and he got even better at drumming than former works (terrific downbeat in''Time Of Our Life''!) . Jeff is now hitting his peak so I can't imagine he's going to retire.

His age is no real barrier to continuing recording as he can do it at his own pace without over exerting himself as he might on tour. There are plenty of older musicians still producing material that way. It all boils down to whether he wants to do it or whether he thinks what he’s written is worth releasing. As to whether it’s ‘Jeff Lynne’ or ‘Jeff Lynne’s ELO’, I can’t personally see any difference, either way in the studio it’s just him and live it’s him with a bunch of session musicians. Most likely is the ELO name making it easier to market successfully, which I suspect was why he resurrected it in the first place.

If he calls it a day then he has deserved it, he is in his 70s now and the exertions of touring must be getting to him in some form. If I'm really honest these last two albums although good, don't rank alongside the greats from the 70s and early 80s (AITU and FOON are just solo albums in all but name) That's just my opinion though, feel free to object!

I've been struggling to think of bands where the latter output has achieved greater critical acclaim than their early material. A lot of this has to do with the fanbase and their understandable 'rose tinted spectacles' view of the historical stuff in comparison to the modern. In Lynne's case I think it's pretty clear he'd have to do something extraordinary to eclipse the glory years of the late seventies, a fact born out by his heavy reliance on the old songs during these latter day tours, and I doubt very much this is likely, particularly given his apparent disdain for using any other musicians to achieve a more 'live' and organic feel during the recording process.

I don’t really think it’s disdain for other musicians. Jeff said in an interview he plays all the instruments himself because he thinks it’s fun. But we all know he’s a perfectionist and that’s probably got something to do with it.

But we all know he’s a perfectionist and that’s probably got something to do with it. I'm afraid I'm old school. When I see a band advertised, I want to hear a band, not somebody doing it all by themselves. As I alluded to about 'rose tinted spectacles' above perhaps it also has something to do with the earlier material sounding so much more vibrant due to the inclusion of other musicians, particular in areas where he's not very proficient like drums. It's such a shame it all fell apart like that. I'd probably have a bit more respect for the later stuff it it had remained 'Jeff Lynne' and stood on its own merits.

I'm extremely grateful for the beautiful music he has shared with all of us. Personally, I can't imagine what my life would have been like without it and hope he will keep doing what he loves any way he choose's to do it.

It’s true it’s not much of a band anymore, and it’s also true that other people add other flavors if you will into music. I just think it’s great that he’s still making new music, and if he likes playing all those instruments, then that’s cool too.

I feel we get the best of all worlds. An album every few years made 99% by Jeff and a fantastic touring band to listen to the new stuff and relive the old stuff. It is shame that it's not bev on the drums and Richard isn't up to playing live but I'm more than grateful to hear and see my hero after so many years with nothing.
