Thought I'd turn the "Sounds like ELO/Jell Lynne" thread upside down. I couldn't find such topic here (sorry if there is already), so I thought I'd do it. Are there ELO/Jeff Lynne songs that remind you of other songs? There are others, but here are some examples that come to mind now: Heaven Only Knows: The verses remind me very much of the verses in You Won't See Me by the Beatles. Kuiama: This has always reminded me of And Your Bird Can Sing by the Beatles. I'm not sure what it is. The chords are the same, but they were not unique to begin with. Must be something that happens in the melodies when the chords change. Steppin' Out (the intro guitar melody) and The Mission (the same melody in the "How's life on Earth?" bit). There's a similar bit in Band On The Run ("Like you, mama"). Showdown: I Heard It Trough The Grapevine. End Of The Road: The verse starts with the same melody as the verse in Any Time At All by the Beatles. One Summer Dream: Very vague similarity in the verse melody between this and Dream #9 by John Lennon. But enough for one of them to remind me of the other. Look At Me Now: A less beautiful and less atmospheric version of Eleanor Rigby. (I once heard a hit from the 70's that was released earlier than Out Of The Blue and the chords were very much like the ones on The Whale. Don't remember the song!) EDIT: In the other thread the emphasis seemed to be on songs that came later, but I would like to collect songs that came BEFORE the ones by ELO and Jeff.

Words of Aaron always puts me in mind of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, mostly the outro

The very end string section/bridge on "Whitchita linesman" by Glenn Campbell always reminds me of E.L.O. as does "Music" by John Miles......as does and I apologise for this one S.O.S. by Abba. And noi am not comparing Jeff or E.L.O. to ABBA. As I have a severe pain in my nuts to those who do! Anyway thur ye have it!

Here's one from left field...
How about the string section in the middle 8 of Shine A Little Love (the bit underneath "Can you understand, yes I understand..." etc) which seems totally lifted from Airport by The Motors?

Actually I came back to this thread to put "Airport" on.....more like the "motors" completely ripped ELO!

A few come to mind...
"Kuiama" has always reminded me of "Someday Never Comes" by CCR.
"Hello, My Old Friend" sounds like a mashup of "A Day In The Life", "Penny Lane", and, lyrically, at least, The Kinks "Waterloo Sunset".
"Everyone's Born To Die", and "Poor Boy" both sound like Jeff was on a major Bob Dylan kick.
"Train Of Gold" is the best song The Bee Gees never did.
"Hold On Tight" is Jerry Lee Lewis on steroids.
"First Movement(Jumpin' Biz)" is a "Classical Gas".
"Across the Border" is a near rewrite of The Beach Boys "Heroes and Villains".

Thank you for your contributions! I'm going to check all of those. Across The Border was mentioned. I've always felt that Jeff rewrote it later and called it "The Way Life's Meant To Be". And Mama, of course, must've been partly influenced by You Only Live Twice. Jeff used the same idea later on One Summer Dream.

Jumping biz by Mason Williams Classical gas!!! Well done I don't know how I didn't get that one before!

- "Mister Kingdom" = "Across the Universe" (the Beatles)
- "Hello, my old friend" = "I am the Walrus" (the Beatles)
- "The lights go down" has a certain similarity to Blondie's "Tide is high".
- "Wild west hero": the chords sequence of the chorus is very similar to Pachelbel's "Canon in D", but in another key.
- The first riff of "Ma-ma-ma belle" is quite similar to the Rolling Stones' "Brown sugar" (blame Marc Bolan there).
The similarity between "First Movement(Jumpin' Biz)" and "Classical Gas" is too big to not be noticed by anyone who knows the two songs. It's a blatant copy in my opinion.

Back before I knew what was what in music I really did think 'Airport' was an ELO song.
'Summer and Lightning' has a little Steve Miller borrowing in it. 'Julie Don't Live Here Anymore' in surely ABBA-like. For some reason there's a few notes in 'Livin' Thing' that remind me of parts of the Tremeloes' 'Here Comes my Baby'.
I read an article somewhere that said ELO were a band that sounded like the Bee Gees had joined Abba.

I read an article somewhere that said ELO were a band that sounded like the Bee Gees had joined Abba. That comment is typical of someone who has never heard ELO before and is judging over a basis of 2 or 3 songs (Mr. Blue Sky irremediably being one of them). It's a lazy comparison. In my opinion, only a small handful of ELO songs could be said to have something in common with ABBA, luckily; and not that many to the Bee Gees.

The verse in Summer And Lightning reminds me of Waterfall. The chorus reminds me of Is It True? by the Eagles.

Pretty obvious one, but since no-one else has mentioned it yet... the vocal effect on Yours Truly 2095 is inspired by The Buggles' Video Killed The Radio Star.
