I've heard of the rift between Roy and Bev,but it doesn't compare to Jeff and Bev. Never heard of a rift with Richard though, didn't he work with Bev and Kelly on Kellys' early stuff?

Yes. With Mik and Louis on his solo album, Kelly.

I agree that DBMD never quite does it live. I’ve always thought the best version was from ‘Heartbeat ‘86’. Bev did a long drum intro and the cherry on the cake was Jeffs kickass solo. I love the track but I’ve always wondered why Jeff (who hates writing lyrics), didn’t put in a guitar solo on the 3rd verse. That extended intro to Don't Bring Me Down started evolved over the previous Time Tour, though I'm partial to the version from Rotterdam on 12 February 1982 because the audience sang a local football chant over Bev's drums (as they'd also do on quite a few audience recordings of Queen shows I've also heard, often in the wait for an encore). Furthermore, this concert is special for being the first time ELO would play after their "flying visit" to Wisseloord Studios, and you can hear a lot of that lingering energy and enthusiasm - I'd be happy too if I'd just laid down the basic tracks for four songs that were intended to appear on the resulting Secret Messages album, including its eventual lead single, Rock 'N' Roll Is King, or Motor Factory as it was then still known! Here's the audio from this truly electric night: P.S. Oh, and unlike its '86 counterpart, you also get Kelly engaging the crowd in addition to his more usual bass/vocal duties... Now that really is audience participation. So much better than the recorded version. The DBMD played by the current incarnation of ELO is obviously a far more sanitised version.

The closest I've ever heard of a possible "rift" between Bev and Richard occurred in late 1988, when a reunion was proposed. In short, Jeff had Jet Records issue a statement that November officially confirming the group's immediate dissolution, and while he resumed his post-band career, Richard turned down an invitation to join what became ELO Part II. Prior to that, it's believed Richard sided with Jeff, who objected to how similar Kelly's solo work sounded to ELO's late '70s output. Also, in addition to appearing prominently on Kelly's first solo album, Richard was heavily involved with its planned follow-up, to have been released at some point in early '84 under the title of Lights Out until RCA terminated his remaining contract due to poor sales. Between work concluding on Lights Out and this being turned down by RCA, Jeff asked his colleagues not to further support Kelly, including their participation in any promotional appearances. If anything, Richard's loyalty to Jeff was cemented at this stage, meaning it was somewhat unreasonable of Bev to assume this would change just a few years later, and my guess is that he was seen as pushing his luck by even asking for anything else...

Hey. Just wanted to let you know Bev is a guest on my podcast “Sending Signals” this week. He was pretty candid and open. We talk about his disdain for ELO’s debut album, recording Eldorado, the tracks left off Time, his regrets about forming ELO part 2, writing credits for drummers, and various other stuff. Let me know what you think! I love listening to Bev being interviewed, he always sounds so at ease unlike Jeff who obviously suffers with nerves and shyness. I’m not sure if its the being gagged by court orders or just his unwillingness to talk about the past but he seldom gives much away these days. I’ll grab a cup of tea and enjoy listening to this later. Thanks for sharing.

Well, to be fair to Kelly.... that is what he knows. He's not about to record an lp that sounds like the sex pistols. Barry Goudreau's 1980 solo lp is extremely similar to that of Boston's first two releases. And the Ric Ocasek lp Emotion in Motion sounds much like a Cars lp. phil collins and genesis.... the list goes on and on. As a matter of fact, would be harder to find the band member solo lp that didnt sound much like the band he or she was in. One that does pop into mind....Led Zeppelin / Robert Plant.

I have yet to hear DBMD from the Time tour but having attended Heartbeat 86, Jeff seemed to have a problem with his guitar hence Bev doing extended fills which was great, plus of course Jeffs solo. Later in the show ,Jeff knocked GHs lead out of his guitar by accident. Still can't believe l was lucky enough to be there.

Most people who develop a podcast of this quality want it spread far and wide, correct?

Sorry, livinthing I don't understand what you mean by "Jeff knocked GHs lead out of his guitar by accident."
I get that GH is George Harrison, and I guess we are talking about Johnny B.Goode. "Does knocked out by accident" mean Jeff played George's lead guitar part by accident? Did Jeff knock George out of playing his lead guitar part in some way? Please translate.
Thanks and excuse my dumbassity.

I’m happy for you to repost most things you find interesting from the forum and where possible if you can add a link to the thread it would be appreciated. Posts that contain personal information or pictures I think it would be courteous for you to first ask the forum member if you can copy their information to your Facebook page. In this instance I think eldorado would be happy for you to link to his podcast.

Jeff was playing close to George and the end of his guitar caught the side of George's hitting what I think I can remember was the lead connecting to the amplifier out forcing George to pick it up and re-plugging it back in again.

Totally missed that. An excuse to watch it again! Jeff must have been so embarrassed.
