Thanks for sharing that. To me Bev sounds like someone at peace with the world, albeit with a few regrets. How much input Bev had on those records we’ll never know for certain. What we can be certain of is that Jeff has never even come close to replicating that gorgeous drum sound...IMHO. I agree, Bev gave ELO his trademark sound and although Donovan is good he doesn't come close to Bev....

We maybe didn’t realise it at the time but it was probably the single most important aspect of the ‘sound’. I’d give anything for Jeff to ring Bev and say ‘make it sound like ‘Don’t Bring Me Down’ or ‘Twilight’. Sadly, I don’t think it’ll happen.

I'm surprised Bev remembered songs like Bouncer, and Julie Don't Live Here. And I'm glad he opened up about the ELO Part 2 thing. Maybe he's right when he said they should have called the band something else. He should have called it something else. It was also a mistake when he came up with his version of the Move. I have always felt had he not done part 2, he along with Jeff and Richard would've restarted ELO.

But I understand your point. And, no, I don't think Jeff is going to offer an olive branch.

Bev's real input declined over the years and by the time Discovery rolled around drums had become mechanical.

Oh yeah, you're right, sorry - I think I confused it with Jeff playing drums, just because he did that on the re-recordings album a few years back. What they did with Don't Bring Me Down, was to take a short bit from On The Run, already recorded by Bev, and fiddled with it, to create this drum loop. That's possibly why it never sounds quite right when they play it live. You're so used to this robotic drum sound.

I’ve always thought the best version was from ‘Heartbeat ‘86’. Bev did a long drum intro and the cherry on the cake was Jeffs kickass solo. I love the track but I’ve always wondered why Jeff (who hates writing lyrics), didn’t put in a guitar solo on the 3rd verse.

That extended intro to Don't Bring Me Down started evolved over the previous Time Tour, though I'm partial to the version from Rotterdam on 12 February 1982 because the audience sang a local football chant over Bev's drums (as they'd also do on quite a few audience recordings of Queen shows I've also heard, often in the wait for an encore). Furthermore, this concert is special for being the first time ELO would play after their "flying visit" to Wisseloord Studios, and you can hear a lot of that lingering energy and enthusiasm - I'd be happy too if I'd just laid down the basic tracks for four songs that were intended to appear on the resulting Secret Messages album, including its eventual lead single, Rock 'N' Roll Is King, or Motor Factory as it was then still known! Here's the audio from this truly electric night: P.S. Oh, and unlike its '86 counterpart, you also get Kelly engaging the crowd in addition to his more usual bass/vocal duties...

The mistake wasn't the name but forming "Part Two" in the first place. I understand how Bev felt, but forming a band with the ELO name so prominent in it was always going to lead to disappointment. I was at the Birmingham NEC that might in '91 and although it was good to see Bev, Kelly, Mik, Louis and Hugh again, we were all acutely aware of that gaping Jeff-sized hole that could never be filled even with the presence of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra! It also gave rise to all those spin-off bands claiming dubious ELO heritage that Jeff ended up having to deal with and that can't have helped relationships.
It's nice to see Bev willing to eat some humble pie, (clearly still in the forlorn hope of a reconcilliation) but even I can now see he is wasting his time. However intransigent, Jeff's made his mind up - not even speaking to him at Trevor Francis's wife's funeral should have hammered that home (and sorry Jeff, but you don't come out of this well!)
I hope Bev realises this and his forthcoming book does indeed "tell it like it is" (at least from his POV) as I think he's been on the receiving end a little too much from Jeff's camp recently, ( the RR Hall of Fame debacle was just petty and desperately mean-spirited).
Time, (however reluctantly) to move on Bev, your former "friend" has..

Jeff, Richard, Bev and Roy should have been there, side by side. No doubt.

I think he should move on too, Bev has shown that although he has made mistakes,he is willing to admit these but Jeff just will not listen. Like you say,Jeff looks bad in all this...oh well....

Sorry to show my ignorance but what was the story regarding Trevor Francis’ wife’s funeral. I take it Jeff and Bev attended but there was no thawing of the relationship. That is so sad. If a funeral teaches us anything it’s that life’s too short.

Sometimes I hate Jeff for his standing in all of this,Bev knows he did something that really pi**ed Jeff off and has tried to make amends but Jeff is one stubborn old goat. If only he read this forum and could see how it's affected us fans...

Besides, I get the feeling Roy and maybe Richard have had a few differences with Bev.
