This was a new one on me but apparently refers to bands/singers active in the mid seventies, mostly ifrom Southern California like Toto. Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, Christopher Cross and Michael McDonald era Doobie Brothers. All of them would seem to fit into the AOR/MOR categories of soft rock. Makes you wonder if ELO don't have a few characteristics ithat fit it too, certainly better than the, admittedly mistaken, inclusion in Guilty Pleasures!
*There's a documetary about it on BBC 4 on Friday.

I've read that Peter Criss' (KISS) solo albums have been termed Yacht rock also...

Duran Duran, they certainly have been called 'Yacht Rock'. Especially "Rio" - doesn't the video have a yacht in it?
If ELO had a "Yacht Rock" period I'd say it was once they introduced saxophones into the band.
