Oh man, I love Midnight Blue. It may be ELO's most underappreciated song. Brilliant melody. I think 79-80 (Discovery -Xanadu) was a very challenging time for long-time ELO fans. I did begin to....um.....have my doubts. But then Time restored my faith, and 40 years on I enjoy those "difficult" albums. Jeff was doing the right thing, fucking with us a bit.

A lot of ELO fans talk about it as if it were some cheap thing, something obvious that has been done a lot of times or that's really easy to come up with. I mean, you may like it or dislike it but the chords sequence alone shows that it's no ordinary work.

I was 14 the first time I heard A New World Record. Sounds like "Discovery" was your "new world record". jefflynneselo.proboards.com/thread/1706/power-14

Discovery was also my first ELO album. I got it a year after its release as the Confusion single was my all time favourite. Listened to it almost daily during my summer vacation from school - age of 11. Midnight Blue was another essential track for me. Although Time tops my ELO list now, Discovery will always have a special place in my collection.

Welcome denny ! I can't say that Discovery is my favorite ELO album, but I "discovered" ANWR at the tender age of 11 and immediately became a fan!

I think Discovery had the most prominent bass mix of any ELO album since a couple of tracks were in the disco style. Last Train to London has a bass line that I've never been able to replicate with my rudimentary skill on the instrument (I've kind of been able to play Shine A Little with the help of some tablature websites...). Does anyone have the inside info on who played the part on the record? Kelly, Jeff, or some studio ace? Didn't ShardEnder once mention that there was an 'incident' between Kelly and Jeff during the Discovery sessions? As Kelly seemed to have less vocal duties post Out of the Blue did he also play less bass on the albums too? Thanks!

According to "Jeff Lynne Song Database", Kelly played it. I love watching youtube vids of musicians just playing the bass line.

Even' with the tablature I just don't have the speed or accuracy in my playing to pull the line off with any consistency... Kudos to Kelly! Bumpin' and thumpin', pickin' and grinnin'...
