A good read,it shows how the seeds of disintegration were sown and how Jeffs aims of being numero uno started.

Personally, I rate Discovery very high. ELO were at their height, they had been touring extensively and just put a massive album out with 78 mins of brilliant music. How could you follow that? But they did with another 9 fantastic ELO classic tracks with a superb album cover too. I was only about 11 at the time but following ELO on the radio best I could. I remember Wild West Hero had been their last record, then hearing Dont Bring Me Down, thinking 'yes' what a belter! Happy 40th DiscoVery

Discovery might be my favourite ELO album, or at least the only LP where I never skip a track.

Discovery!! Ahhh...Disco Very. This album presented some difficulties for me at the time. Imagine me, 17 years old, grade 11, a proud ELO lover, a wearer of the OOTB ELO t-shirt and belt, a person looked upon with great respect, because Turn To Stone, Telephone Line, Strange Magic, etc, etc, etc, fucking rule, ok?? And then.......Shine A Little Love. WTF? I had some doubts about this new direction. My twin brother, a Zep fan, chided me constantly. "You shine a little love, whoo hoo hoo, " Fuckin, Zep were still cool, even though In Through The Out Door was an equally shocking departure. The shirt and belt were put away for a while. "Hey Man, ELO gone disco hahaha" shouted some friends. "Where's your belt?" Confusion and Don't Bring Me Down soon followed in radio play. Don't Bring Me Down kicked fucking ass. Even my twin brother loved it. It took a while, but I was cool again. Discovery was....um....gradually discovered. Horace Wimp was/is epic. I fully embraced Discovery, but I wasn't sure at first. This was a tough road. The shirt and belt proudly reappeared. 40 years later I think "Jeff, you fucker. You made a left turn with Discovery, and then you made Time soon after. You never ceased to amaze me." And Shine A Little Love is alright!!

@ole - I had the same issues w/ Discovery I started college in 1980 and blasting Discovery down the dorm hallway was met with some strange stares. Disco had become quite unpopular and Discovery seemed like sort of a wimpy album - too pretty, too soft, not masculine enough. Dire Straits replaced ELO at the top of the record pile for a few years.
40 years later, I don't give a damn - just turn up the volume and let the gorgeous sounds fill the room. Discovery is one of Jeff's top 5 albums.

Well, maybe, it's because I am from Germany because I've never looked at it that way. In my opinion the album doesn't sound too soft, it's a mixture of ballads and cool uptempo tracks. You could just as well say that it's spacey electro pop relying heavily on electronic sounds. And being obsessed with the latest technology, isn't that rather a masculine thing? :-)

Discovery is a bit heavy on the ballads, but overall I think it still stands up well alongside the best of ELO.

I think that some aren't up to the standard of others. There are three on Discovery that I can avoid...

But, to balance things up a bit, the album has two of my three favourites - Confusion and Horace - and that is (IMHO) the best thing that Jeff's ever written or produced.
To be fair, Shine A Little Love, Last Train To London and Don't Bring Me Down aren't bad either
And, it's been said before, the album cover is OUTSTANDING!

Here's what electronic music pioneer Jean Michel Jarre said about the album: Source: Yousif Nur. Baker’s Dozen. Oxygene Of Collaboration. Jean Michel Jarre’s Favourite Albums. The Quietus: www.thequietus.com, 20. Oktober 2015.

If you didn't skip tracks then there wouldn't be enough time to listen to favourite songs twice! And I only skip if I'm short on time.
Anyway, it must be allowed to skip 'MBS' at least, you can hear it too much.
