BIuebird, I'm surprised by the amount of your picks that I like a lot and chose too or could easily have chosen! You are probably the person with the closest taste to mine when it comes to ELO songs.

Helmut83I would have to agree! I just took a peek at your picks, and I was debating on a few of the ones that you ended up picking, but I didn't. I love all of those!

BIuebird about Tightrope, me too!! Well, I’d first heard of ELO when they used Mr Blue Sky in the Guardians of the Galaxy, but Tightrope was one of the songs I heard early on which pulled me in deeper. It’s my favorite ELO track, and I consider it to be basically the Bohemian Rhapsody of the ELO world—it’s got everything you could want in a song really, with the long intro and buildup with the string section triplets so that it’s already a masterpiece by the time the vocals come in, and how it fades away with that last chord leaving you in silenced awe as the song fades into silence as well (like the scene in Bo Rhap where they bring the album in and play it for that guy who looks kinda like Jeff Lynne, who is evidently admiring the song but refuses it being the single; sorry I forgot the character’s name). A New World Record was also the very first album I ever bought, I dug it out (or rather...fate pulled me to it) from the unsorted section of a used vinyl shop in Reno by my sister’s college in a frenzied fit after seeing both their CD and vinyl sections marked ELO were all wiped out. I think it took about .002 seconds for me to recognize the cover and I yanked it out with a squeak and held it in shaking hands...I’m pretty sure the lady browsing around near me was wondering why a teen was getting so worked up over a record hahah. Also pretty sure my sis is still a bit jealous that I found it first and was the only one to go home with ELO that day (even though she obviously has since gotten a copy of her own).

Tightrope is a masterpiece. It was the perfect song for Jeff to open his best album with.

The 'Bohemian Rhapsody' of the ELO world? Yes! It is . The song should be better known.
'Tightrope' does have everything. I always think of it as a dark and dramatic opening to an opera. Less a song more of an experience (like 'BoRhap') which is why I felt it was so good as a concert opener in 2016.

Whilst far from the simplest or most direct decisions I've ever made: No Answer/Electric Light Orchestra: Mr. Radio (a surprisingly contemplative and affecting infusion of latter-day Beatles and an extraterrestrial's interpretation of Edwardian music-hall ditties) ELO II: Kuiama (the searing Minimoog accompaniment arguably provides a unique backbone to this elongated moodpiece's tonal aesthetic) On the Third Day: Showdown (an early example of Lynne and co. mastering the tone and 'feel' of a late-60s Beatles album whilst adding an individual touch. It's also among the earliest tracks in ELO's repertoire to lean into infectious territory as opposed to the ponderous-but-unpolished orchestral symphonies of previous albums) Eldorado: Laredo Tornado (the powerful, ominous (to the extent of resembling a storm, a tone I've rarely witnessed other songs of the genre capture as effectively) beat and iconic refrain seal this track as my prime choice) Face the Music: One Summer Dream (hits a personal melodic sweet spot, although I should cite 'Fire on High' as a close runner-up for being a tour de force of musical genre blending) A New World Record: Tightrope (the juxtaposition between the tense sweeping spectacle of the opening orchestral flourish and the unapologetically rollicking main theme is arguably one of Lynne's finest achievements musically) Out of the Blue: Sweet is the Night (a fabulously bittersweet and exhilarating track with a unique aesthetic scale and memorable instrumental touches (the searing analog-recorded guitar backing is possibly my favourite moment of the ELO album discography) - Turn to Stone and Latitude 88 North are both memorable achievements worthy of a reference here additionally) Discovery: The Diary of Horace Wimp (the song itself is such an idiosyncratic and infectious one that it amplifies the surrounding disco-era production values into a sweet spot of endearing cheese) Xanadu: The Fall (sports an effectively sophisticated main melody to build the crystalline aesthetic of late-70s ELO around) Time: 21st Century Man (an evocative and grandiose masterpiece of space-opera pop composition) Secret Messages: Bluebird (a successfully downbeat ballad and a worthy tribute to Lynne's Out of the Blue material) Balance of Power: Calling America (subjectively the most melodically memorable song on the album) Note that I haven't listened to Zoom or Alone in the Universe for a number of years now.

I think after becoming more familiar with Zoom and AITU especially, I’ll have to revisit my favorite tracks...but I’ll wait until the new album is out and put that one on there too. Can’t wait!
