Agreed, Timeblue. One of the great things about ELO is that their variety of styles over the years appeal to a variety of people with different tastes. Though it's certainly not my favorite album, I like a lot of the stuff on Zoom. Even though I consider them both to be Jeff solo albums, I am more comfortable with considering Zoom as an ELO album than AITU; it just seems to fit better with the ELO vibe in my opinion. The only songs that really catch my attention on AITU are When I Was a Boy, Alone in the Universe, and the bonus track Blue... which I am still slightly rather upset didn't make it onto the LP. No disrespect meant to you, coathanger, but I personally cannot fathom anyone not liking Time...

No need to hide under a chair, it's not that I don't like it, I just had a feeling of supreme indifference when it came out and despite repeated attempts to get into it since (including earlier today) that appraisal hasn't changed. To be honest, I didn't like Discovery very much either as it seemed to be a bandwagon jumper (disco) to me at the time which is probably why I only rate 'Don't Bring Me Down' off it nowadays. As for the post Time stuff, he was just going through the motions to my ears. It happens with writers sometimes, they have an early spurt and then fade away a bit. To me, the first 5 years of existence was my ELO, but I'm pleased the later stuff has found a home with some of you on here.

But, like yourself I don't have to like the man to appreciate ELO music Oh, no, when it comes down to this I still really enjoy his music, as I do with the music of so many other artists which don't seem likeable to me (judging by their attitudes I came to know of). I'm upset with him as a fan and I've decided I'm no longer going to buy his products, but that isn't an obstacle which will keep me from extensively enjoying his music and recognizing him as a freaking genius.

About "Time" (and this is not a play on words), and trying to leave aside how much or little I like it, the creativity in it's songs is fascinating to me. The chords sequences are complex for that kind of pop, there's usually so many chords involved, and all of the songs have small parts which are different from the rest of the song and are very interesting in themselves. When I'm listening to it I often fascinate at how the guy came up with so much different stuff for just a 3-minute song.
Last holidays I was travelling with a friend who is familiar with Discovery and the Wilburys, and I had connected my cell phone to the car's audio, playing songs randomly. When "From the end of the world" started playing my friend was fascinated, he couldn't believe it was Jeff Lynne, he kept saying "this is so psychedelic!".

This has been so hard, took me a week to work on it, but my votes go for:
• No Answer: 10538 Overture (but the 2012 re-recording)
• ELO 2: From The Sun To The World
• On the Third Day: Ma Ma Ma Belle (especially when played in concert/live)
• Eldorado: Can’t Get It Out Of My Head
• Face the Music: One Summer Dream
• A New World Record: Rockaria!
• Out of the Blue: Mr Blue Sky & Standin’ In The Rain (double pick for a double album)
• Discovery: The Diary Of Horace Wimp
• Xanadu: All Over The World
• Time: Hold On Tight
• Secret Messages: Stranger & Rock n Roll is King (double pick for a double album)
• Balance of Power: So Serious
• Zoom: Ordinary Dream

1. Electric Light Orchestra - Whisper In The Night 2. ELO 2 - Kuiama 3. On the Third Day - Daybreaker 4. Eldorado – Nobody’s Child 5. Face the Music - Waterfall 6. A New World Record – Surrender (if it's allowed!) 7. Out of the Blue – Sweet Talkin’ Woman 8. Discovery – Don’t Bring Me Down 9. Xanadu – I’m Alive 10. Time - Twilight 11. Secret Messages – Danger Ahead 12. Balance of Power – So Serious 13. Zoom – Easy Money 14. Alone in the Universe – Ain’t It A Drag
It was hardest choosing from Zoom and AITU as it's not as familiar as the older stuff and I'm still getting used to the sound.
It's quite alarming how much my choices have changed since the last time we did this. I think half of my picks are different.

Really hard to choose songs from the last two albums, I think they're very weak.

I somehow completely missed this thread until now! This looks like such a fun thing to sit down and do; let's see what I can come up with! Electric Light Orchestra - 10538 Overture ELO 2 - Kuiama On the Third Day - Bluebird Is Dead Eldorado – Can't Get It Out Of My Head (my all-time fave ELO song!!) Face the Music - Strange Magic A New World Record – Tightrope Out of the Blue – Big Wheels Discovery – Need Her Love Xanadu – Don't Walk Away Time - Ticket To The Moon Secret Messages – Bluebird Balance of Power – Getting To The Point Zoom – Ordinary Dream Alone in the Universe – All My Life A lot of this depends on what kind of mood I'm in. I tried my very best to pick what I would consider my all-time favorites, but some days I prefer slower songs and some days I prefer upbeat songs

I've added up the scores and i can exclusively reveal the our favourite songs from each album, (up to this point in time), are as follows:-
ELO, 10538 Overture.
ELO2, Kuiama.
OTTD, Ma-ma-ma Belle, Showdown, Dreaming of 4000, Bluebird is Dead and Daybreaker. (Tied on 3 votes each).
Eldorado, Can't Get It Out Of My Head.
FTM, Waterfall.
ANWR, Tightrope.
OOTB, Sweet Is The Night, Sweet Talkin' Woman, Big Wheels. (tied on 3 votes each).
Discovery, The Diary Of Horace Wimp.
Xanadu, All Over The World.
Time, 21st Century Man, Twilight. (tied on 4 votes each).
S. Messages, Hello My Old Friend.
BOP, Heaven Only Knows.
Zoom, Ordinary Dream.
AITU, When I Was A Boy.
'Don't walk away' gets an honourable mention by running 'All Over The World' very close on Xanadu. If only we could get our act together and decide which is our favourite track on 'OTTD', 'OOTB' and 'Time' we'd have a cracking track list. They're all deserving winners. The one i was most surprised by was 'Horace Wimp' winning by a short head on 'Discovery. Having gone through all these lists, i did wonder why i'd gone for certain songs, but my list would probably...(definitely) change from day to day.

This was difficult! I was unsure if bonus tracks were allowed, so I stuck them in parentheses, just in case they are.
Electric Light Orchestra - 10538 Overture ELO 2 - From the Sun to the World On the Third Day - Dreaming of 4000 (or Everyone's Born to Die) Eldorado - Boy Blue Face the Music - Waterfall A New World Record - Tightrope (or Surrender, if that counts?) Out of the Blue - Summer and Lightning Discovery - On the Run Xanadu - The Fall Time - The Way Life's Meant to Be (or Julie Don't Live Here) Secret Messages - Please don't make me choose between Bluebird and Danger Ahead! Balance of Power - So Serious Zoom - State of Mind Alone in the Universe - Dirty to the Bone

Excellent picks from ANWR BIuebird I think I’m going to have to revise my list, I took a peek at it again and as I’ve refamiliarized myself with songs I’d forgotten how good they were, things have changed, haha!
ps, does anyone know how to type “L-o-l” without it swapping it out for the smiley? Nothing against said smiley but sometimes l o l is different than lol if y’all know what I mean ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

nobodyschildThanks! I was going to mention on your story recounting that I also would have loved to hear Tightrope on the tour! It's the song that really got me into ELO, so it holds special significance for me.
